Yeah, there was a story, too, written by Rick Klaw after a night of hazy shenanigans at a funnybook convention. Rick and I, long time convention danger buddies, would partake and prattle about four-color nonsense until the wee hours of the morning. One particular prattle involved batting around ideas for a romance/monster short. Little did we imagine someone(s), the late great Gary Reed and the Pruitt Bros of Caliber Comics, would agree to publish the darn thing. There was some talk of a sequel "SON OF ROTHRO, KING OF THE GIANT FLYING GORILLAS FROM THE EARTH'S CORE", this time a romance/monster/50's biker story. We even had a small press publisher on the line to publish an anthology of gorilla matter, but balked when said publisher insisted we change the name from FLYING GORILLA FUNNIES to GO APE. Can you imagine? GO APE, indeed.
In a side note. Showing this cover to Mark Chiarello, the monumental art director of Detective Comics, is what led to my getting work at DC (and more importantly a long friendship with Mark).
Second side note, this image is in COW! sketchbook pdf you get in w a commitment of $5 or more.
