Sexism and Serving (1/2)
I was a waitress from 18 to 25, on and off, at a variety of cheap restaurants. I worked chains like IHOP, Steak N Shake, Red Lobster, and Don Pablo’s. I also worked at two independent diners, one that closed nights after the dinner rush and another – delightfully named Angie’s Diner – was open 24 hours a day.

I sold breakfast food, seafood, Mexican, and Greek. I had some ridiculous uniforms and dress codes to follow, like khaki shorts over sheer stockings, with crew socks and tennis shoes. We weren’t even permitted to remove our stockings the day the A/C broke and the dining room was hot and muggy.
