I started working in restaurants at 17, as a hostess and busser for a waterfront seafood bar and grill. One of the bartenders was particularly helpful in reminding adult men who would try to pinch my bottom as I ran past with a dish rag that I was underage, “15 will get you 20” he’d chide them, saying I was younger because neither of us thought 17 would protect me.
