I know I learned to sit politely for bad reasons. My Christian school and church required me to wear dresses, and the revealing nature of those dresses was why I needed to keep my knees together. The clothes adults picked out for me didn’t properly conceal my underpants unless I was careful of how I sat. These days I don’t wear dresses or skirts. My underpants are well hidden, even if I don’t keep my feet down and knees together. But those dresses and the shame of what I had under them were how the world taught me to sit small. Boys meanwhile didn’t walk around with the same imposed flashing risk. And no one told them to keep their knees together. Read more
