Sketching at the Prince of Wales bridge
I will be sketching at the Prince of Wales Bridge over the next few outings. The City (in all it's wisdom) has decided to build a quarter million dollar gate to prevent pedestrians from enjoying the scenic bridge. Apparently there is no middle ground between this and the 10 million price tag it would cost to make it "secure" (which the Feds require). In my opinion an expensive gate will not make it secure either. While sketching I saw hundreds of people using the bridge. Teenage boys in particular scaled the supports and also the piers. A gate will not keep them out, it will be seen as a challenge. Although a 10 million price tag seems high, I suspect the long term economic and social benefits of an Ottawa-Gatineau pedestrian bridge would recoup the upfront expense. The outpouring of support and love from the public also suggests something more significant should happen with this space.
