Here's the full(ish) story: I've been working part-time at a local Sheetz station for a little over a year. I signed on at the end of November 2018.
I liked this job for a while, mostly because of my coworkers. The work itself was hard, but once I learned and adjusted, it came easily.
But the customers...
Let me give you context: I currently live in a BLOOD RED conservative part of rural Ohio. As in, so red and rural that the KKK passed out fliers in a town 30 minutes south of my town.
Add to this: oil and gas workers from Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama working at fracking wells (oh yeah, those exist in the valley around me). These workers will LITERALLY flood the Sheetz I work at, order their food, get back on the bus, and work another 12-hour shift.
For the last year or so, I've seen far too many MAGA hats, NRA shirts, Don't Tread on Me fake patriotic gear, and Nazi tattoos to be comfortable with it anymore.
And now it’s gotten to the point where I’m literally ready to launch over the counter and shank the next man who calls me “sweetheart.” And I could do it – we have sharp knives in our kitchens, and the kitchen is within arms’ reach of the register.
However, I know myself, and I’ve seen this pattern before: when I feel ready to murder the customers, I need to leave.
So I turned in my two weeks notice.
Well I’m not moving out of this valley until the end of April/beginning of May. So that’s 4 or 5 months.
I’m going to take those 4 or 5 months and just focus on freelancing, making comics, and making art.
That was my plan for work after I move, to just freelance full-time with no outside part-time gig. So this will give me a chance to test-run this plan.
So far, I have 2 galleries interested in showing off my work (more updates to come soon), Validation to return to, a new ko-fi page to promote, and freelance gigs to fulfill.
I’m actually pretty hopeful that life after Sheetz will be not just artistically fulfilling, but psychologically fulfilling as well.
At least I won’t be tempted to jump over the counter and murder somebody.
Thank you for reading!
You. Are. Awesome.
