I'm excited to be writing this article. Since I was a child, Sonic has always been one of my favorite characters. But, for over a decade, Sonic has starred in some really bad games with Sega. It appeared that they didn’t care about their own mascot. But now, with the release of Sonic Mania, he's finally back to his 2D, side-scrolling roots- where he does his best work. So, boot up the game and get ready for the nostalgia.
The story seems to be what it always was; Eggman goes after the Chaos Emeralds for some evil purpose and it's up to Sonic and his friends to stop him. You can play the game as either Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, or Sonic and Tails with the stages hiding paths and secrets only accessible by, say, “Tails’ flying or Knuckles’ strength.” Not to mention you'll need all of the Chaos Emeralds to achieve the true ending meaning.
The levels are very well done. The redesign of places like Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant and new zones like Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon make playing Sonic again even more exciting. I loved the old zones, but it's the new places that held more allure to me. I was eager to set out and explore these untouched areas of awesomeness.
The controls are great- exactly like they used to be. Unfortunately, they put pretty much every Sonic mechanic they had in previous games into this game, even the bad ones like on rails boss fights and that annoying keep the lights on bit from Sandopolis. It is still crap, even after all these years.
Lots of Easter Eggs from other Sega games are in here as well, so keep your eyes peeled.
It's sad, but maybe Sonic will never break away from his 2D roots but this game shows us that that's okay. Even after all these years, good games are still good games. No need to worry, Sonic is still relevant. I give this game a 7.8/10 “ right in the nostalgia.”
