stories my body told

a brittle scaffolding of bone and regret

a throat lined in bitten tongue and scarred

a steel backbone that braces this tender heart

pulsing reluctantly against

its corporeal cage

the elixir of a forgotten goddess

brewed with hard water and fermented

decanted by rough hands and sorry mouth

dripping thick down

whiskey barrel thighs

the remains of a once-golden city

haunted by possibility and memory

plundered by lovers and opportunists alike

eroding grain by grain

its resolve

a defiant hybrid of fire and mahogany

a physical manifestation of knowledge and ancestry

a sun child, bringer of light and liberation

transmuting death drives into

new life
