Thematic Mechanics: Randomness
I came up with the idea to categorize game mechanics by theme or concept a while back. As a data analyst, I’m always looking for ways to distill the real world into bits that I can store away and look up when I need them. Additionally, I tend to design from theme into mechanics, so having a sort of glossary for mechanics, organized by theme, made sense to me.

In helping me arrive at these categorizations, I wanted to write a bit on each subject. Not only will this aid me in taming the wild nonsense floating around in my head, but also hopefully give some insight as to why and how I labeled each item. I invite you to join me as we dive into the concept of randomness, themes that fit this concept, and how you can use game mechanics to drive that theme home with players. Let’s get to it!
