The Alexandrian " Thinking About Urbancrawls - Part 5: Using the Ptolus Hexmap
Using the experimental hexmap we made for Ptolus (which you might want to open in a second window for easy cross-referencing), imagine that the PCs are staying at the Ghostly Minstrel in hex E5. The GM asks them what they want to do and they say that they want to head south into the Longbottom neighborhood.
Thinking About Urbancrawls - Part 5: Using the Ptolus Hexmap
Spoilers for those who don't have early access: The hexmap approach doesn't really work. This series really does walk though a (slightly cleaned up) version of how my thoughts on urbancrawls developed. At the time I wrote this segment, I was still struggling to figure out exactly why the hexmap doesn't work. I think the key failure is that the hexes don't represent anything meaningful in the city itself. The structure is so utterly artificial that it doesn't click. There are a bunch of other problems with my specific implementation of the hexmap here. Untangling those problems (one by one) is what eventually leads us to the conclusion of the series.
