Treasure Island, By Robert Louis Stevenson, Ch 30
Chapter 30, On Parole Doctor Livesey arrives as mutineers doctor and discovers Jim among them as a hostage. Captain Long John reveals further duplicity as he does all he can to keep from the rope. For me, I find the idea of Captain Silver to be the most fun. His duplicity knows no bounds. The character, while at times being the pinnacle wit, daring and charm, boasts just as many bests with all of the awful deeds he is witnessed to inflict, although, I think he is a powerful foil to Jim Hawkins with his honesty and integrity. Overall, despite his wicked ways, he is in my opinion the most humanely written in the story, with all his wit and courage affording him the broadest scope of traits. Hands down my favorite character. What's yours?
