Update and personal reflections
Good afternoon patrons! I'm happy (and sad) to announce that I am done with my Painting II class for this summer. It was definitely more challenging than I thought it would be - having to complete an OIL painting in about 5 days. I actually had almost two weeks to complete my last painting (pictured above) which was nice. However, I chose to use a 40"x48" for this piece; I built the frame and gessoed the canvas myself. I spent at least 60 hours painting this, if not more. I was at the studio around 6-9 hours a day - even on the weekend. I am still a bit tired and trying to recooperate from all the work I've been doing for the past 5 weeks. Why the Eiffel Tower? Our last subject was to do a piece on either current events or something historical. Jeff had been in Europe last June on a school trip, and I had told him to take plenty of pictures for me because I would probably need to use one for a painting one day. Haha. Although I had fun doing this piece, I don't think I'll ever make anything like it again; landscapes and buildings have never been my thing. Lately, I've been working towards finding my own style and solidifying my body of work. I had a talk with my professor about this (I'll be taking his class next semester, too) and he is going to work with me on this next semester. I've never really believed in finding one style and sticking to it, but lately I've been tired of jumping around different subjects and techniques and not having anything that really looks like "mine". Plus, I need to have a style for my advanced painting classes. Now that I'm done with class, I'm going to spend the next two weeks catching up on stuff that I've fallen behind on lately. I'll be updating my shops later today and adding the Eevee and Vaporeon Pokemon postcards to my Etsy store. My goal is to have all my postcards finished before I start school on the 30th and my new job on the 29th. Oh yeah - I got a job guys! Funds have been super tight lately. I quit work when I moved here to the San Marcos area to focus on my first semester (and because working at Starbucks on top of school for two years was starting to cause health problems). I should have began searching for another job a lot sooner than I did because everything I saved up from working at Starbucks is gone. Not having a job has been nice, but I haven't been able to afford to go out and buy clothes or have my hair properly done for a year now and I recently got very tired of it. I was going to go work for Pizza Hut at first, but then I got offered to be an assistant for a drawing professor at my school! I don't think I've ever been so stoked about a job before. The pay and hours are less than what I would have been earning had I accepted the job from Pizza Hut, but this assistant position will be better for me in the long run. I am very exited to start and will let you guys know how everything goes. Sorry about the long post. Just wanted to let you guys know what's up. By the way, I'll be taking commissions for the next two weeks. I can only do maybe two or three depending on the work, so message me before time runs out! Xoxo, Kayla
