42 year old Rickey Estrada was identified by family as the man who died in custody while in the booking process at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility. At 5:18 pm, on February 1 2020, Estrada had a medical emergency while in the booking area. Jail personnel began life-saving measures by performing CPR. An ambulance was called and transported the inmate to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Sheriff's Detectives have notified the Napa County Medical Examiner's Office, who will be handling the Coroner's duties, which will include an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

As for why Estrada was at the jail, Estrada had been in the booking process for a stabbing. On Saturday, February 1st, 2020 at 9:26 a.m., Santa Rosa Police Department officers responded to the 900 Block of Corporate Center Pkwy and upon arrival, officers located the victim who was eventually transported to a local hospital for treatment. The victim suffered three (3) stab wounds, none of which appeared to be life-threatening. The investigation revealed the altercation occurred in the roadway on Challenger Way near Capricorn Way. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Rickey Estrada, was involved in a verbal altercation with a female. The victim attempted to intervene. Estrada turned his attention towards the victim and stabbed him with a pointed instrument. Estrada was located and barricaded himself in a trailer that was parked on Challenger Way. Estrada refused to exit the trailer for several minutes but finally was taken into custody after lengthy negotiations.
