We are KOKOKO! a collective born in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. We’ve set up a Patreon page because;
1. It’s the best way to share all of the strange and surprising things we make that don’t fit in to the usual boxes (or in normal flight cases) with our fans and...
2. So that you can help us keep bringing our art to all of you around the world. Which is really challenging when most of the band is based in Kinshasa. Let us explain…
Since we started in 2017 there have been some amazing highs: we’ve been featured in Time Magazine and so many other publications, we received Album Of The Month at Rough Trade and were voted the Best Live Act of the year in 2019! We played Tiny Desk, KEXP, Boiler Room, Resident Advisor & BBC live sessions whilst going on six tours all over Europe and America! But one of the biggest highs of them all, we released our debut album 'Fongola' through Transgressive records!
We’ve also had some real lows. We haven’t shared those much as we didn’t want sympathy out of pity, we always wanted our art to be at the front to impact and not be diluted it in miserabilism. We lost our beloved drummer Bovic Mwepu suddenly to lung cancer, a dancer Ruth Sita Kinanga to electrocution, friends in prison, severe health problems... a lot of countries made it nearly impossible for us to get visas (DR Congo is one of the trickiest place for visas, lights are REALLY expensive). We've previously had to leave someone at the border and adapt a gig of just the 4 of us and pick him up on the way back. There’s constant political instability and at the time of writing, our next 3 months tour will be cancelled due to the Coronavirus crisis leaving us without any income.
No matter what blows or barriers we face, we’re determined not to let them get in our way!
If you’ve seen us perform live, you know that we put our heart on the stage’s floor, we’re all about passion, energy and forward motion. This is no sob story, we love what we do and we’re happy so many people love it too. It’s our mission to show the world everything that’s beautiful and challenging about our lives - our innovation is born from struggle and we’re proud of it. We’ve gone further than we ever could have dreamed using our DIY instruments, our unique electronic sounds, passion and sweat but the reality is we need your help to keep going!
We would like to offer you the possibility to sponsor us if you have enjoyed our music, our performances, our videos, whatever! We want you strongly on our side in the long term so we can keep planning surprises and the most exciting things you’ve never seen or heard. Let’s make this become the most thriving thing on PATREON, we have sweated and carved our path with all the difficulties imaginable, support us so we can offer you way more!
With your support we can keep making art, bring you more ambitious and exciting experiences, new collaborations with the wider KOKOKO! artistic collective, and you can help us to support our families, our community, and the next generation of talented kids from the streets of Kinshasa.
It’s only the beginning. Whatever you can give, we thank you for your support.
