Welcome To The Zone, The Reboot: Part Four
Pages 14-15 of WELCOME TO THE ZONE, my graphic novel from 1995. This is a new version, rescanned from the original art and reformatted into Indesign layouts, with new balloons and lettering. My plan is to put the whole thing up online.

This next sequence is based on my memories of the Sunday night Open Mike at ABC No Rio, a performance space in a derelict building on Rivington street in the East Village. Toehead is based on Matthew Courtney, a dapper, baldheaded poet who hosted the Open Mike for most of the 80s. Matthew was the best emcee I ever saw, with a quick wit and timing like Bob Hope. This YouTube video captures Matthew in his prime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v20igMP-yk

Meta is based on no one in particular, but her plot line is taken from a notorious 1980s crime story (no spoilers!). Just for fun, I gave her the face of an ex-girlfriend.
