Welcome To The Zone: The Reboot, Part Five
Pages 16-17 of WELCOME TO THE ZONE, my graphic novel from 1995. This is a new version, rescanned from the original art and reformatted into Indesign layouts, with new balloons and lettering. My plan is to put the whole thing up online.

This sequence is based on my memories of the 1980s performance art Open Mike at ABC No Rio on Rivington Street in New York, hosted by poet Matthew Courtney. It wasn't QUITE a sewer, but ABC No Rio was located in a derelict building that was in perpetual danger of collapsing. Tasha Tigerbaum is a composite character. Her act is based on white rapper Sarah Hauser, a familiar face in both the performance art and Antifolk scene of the time (Sarah is now- I kid you not- a Reiki therapist for cats). The song Tasha  performs is a direct parody of a Sarah Hauser number called "Throw Away That Needle". Tasha's appearance and cringing manner are taken from a poet named Eve Teitelbaum, although she does coincidentally look somewhat like comedienne Kristen Schaal, who was in high school at the time.
