WRITING ADVICE: Another Good Plotting Tool
My friend and patron Bill Bigge jogged my memory with regard to SCAPPLE, an app from the creators of SCRIVENER. I used it a lot when it was in its testing phase and found it tremendously useful. However, when I purchased a new Mac, I forgot to re-download it and it dropped out of my workflow.

Now, I'm usuing it again, this time the fully developed version. SCAPPLE is basically a mind-mapping tool but easier—and more importantly, faster—to use than most. It has bells and whistles—you can adjust colours, borders, backgrounds, connecting lines, and so forth—but as with all the apps I employ for writing, I prefer to keep it as basic as possible. As you can see in the illustration, I type stuff, make connections, and that's it.

SCAPPLE for me is excellent for flow of consciousness creativity. I don't need anything I write in it to make much sense or to have logical progression ... it's just for blurting ideas and seeing what emerges and whether the seeds of a narrative are in there.

From SCAPPLE, any useful material is transferred into OMNIOUTLINER, developed there, then exported to SCRIVENER for writing up.
