So let's talk about what painting en plein air actually is. Wikipedia defines plein air as "a French expression which means 'in the open air' and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors." Traditionally plein air paintings are created in one sitting. They are painted on location. The purpose is capture the time and mood of a location at a particular moment. Artists have always enjoyed painting plein air, but the concept was made popular my the impressionists.
