Prairie Citizen began in a coffee shop, where so many other great things have started.

We were a small group of writers, designers, editors, and educators, and we met in the wake of the last printed issue of Prairie Fire, a regional newspaper that had provided a platform for eclectic, progressive writing in the Great Plains for nine years. We wanted to continue the positive aspects of Prairie Fire that had made it unique and successful, and we wanted to build those aspects into a public-benefit, online-first platform that provided greater reach and more flexibility to speak to the audience we knew still craved that idiosyncratic blend of ecological, social, and cultural writing.

And so we began our great work.

We have a Submittable site for writing submissions, and the website is live with updated content.

Your support will help us to do three things:

  • Provide a platform for writing that offers fresh perspectives, expert information, and creative ideas related to nature, community, and life in the grasslands;
  • Build a fund that will allow us to keep our company sustainable and in the black by helping to pay for ongoing fees and to eventually allow for growth and outreach;
  • Begin the process of becoming a public benefit corporation.

As a patron, you will also have access to special rewards.

Check out our mission statement below and see who is involved. If you have questions or just want to say hi, give us a shout at [email protected].

We're just beginning our journey, and we hope you will join us.

Our Mission

Prairie Citizen is a forum of ideas about nature, community, and life in the grasslands.

Our mission is to foster a bioregionally attuned and socially just civic and cultural life on the North American prairies. We seek to increase awareness of the ecological, social, and cultural issues that affect our many communities—plant, animal, and human. We seek to share information and opinion by experts and thinkers who bring context to what is often simplified and who inform without underestimating. We hope to deepen our community’s understanding of the complex interrelations between ourselves and the natural environment in which we and millions of other species live, as well as among ourselves as members of a diverse human community.
A land ethic changes the role of Homo sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it. It implies respect for his fellow-members and also respect for the community as such.
—Aldo Leopold, 1887–1948
Editorial board members are Thomas P. Lynch, Paul A. Johnsgard, Jack Phillips, and Robert Smith. Editor in chief is Cris Trautner.
