What's this all about?
For the past year I have been organizing and teaching FREE self defense classes for Queer and Trans folks in Columbus, Ohio. Between teaching and training I'm already spending 20+ hours a week making this happen, and I would very much like to expand, keep it free for participants, and provide this and other community support full-time.

Currently, we host classes 3 times per week at my house through Degenderettes (Columbus branch), and I'm beginning to facilitate regular classes at Kaleidoscope Youth Center.

What skills do you teach?
We work primarily on damage reduction and escape from worst-case scenarios, as well as boundary-setting, situational awareness, and de-escalation. Most of the physical techniques are based in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (eg, getting out from someone sitting on top of you), and we do a short bodyweight conditioning warm-up to build strength and motor control.

"This class has taught me skills that help me feel more secure and empowered. The space is very welcoming and Jacky is a passionate, well organized teacher." - MK

Why is this important?
Queer and Trans people are among the most targeted groups when it comes to relationship, sexual, or hate-based violence, and we often find little help from state institutions (if not further dehumanization), creating an incredible need for community-based self-defense. Unfortunately, martial arts and combat sports are plagued by sexism, transphobia, and homophobia. Trans and Queer people need to create our own spaces to practice safely and in a way that is sensitive to our experiences.

Not to mention that Columbus is surrounded by literal nazis. The founder of the Daily Stormer (the most prominent source of online neo-nazi propaganda) lives 15 minutes north of me. This year we've seen repeated flyering of neighborhoods by groups like The Patriot Front, Identity Europa, and the Proud Boys. Especially in the summer, I can't go two weeks without hearing about an assault on a queer person.

Who are you?
I'm a non-binary trans artist and activist (they/them or she/her) who's been living in Columbus for the past four years or so. My athletic background is in parkour, obstacle training, trail running, and climbing (10 years), and I've been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing for two years. Currently I organize with the Degenderettes and I'm a certified street medic with COSMC (Central Ohio Street Medic Collective).

What's next?
Thank you so much!! Your wonderful patronage means the guaranteed continuation of FREE Queer and Trans-centered self defense classes, and in addition you will be helping me do more community support work. More time to spend monitoring hate groups, doing counter-flyering/messaging, more time available to escort/assist queer folks in need, travel to do trainings in other areas, and just generally queering up combat sports culture!

Goals
$64 of $500 per month
Reaching this goal means I can basically do this full time. This will cover rent, space maintenance, and access to black-belt instruction. I'll still have to supplement with freelance artwork, but I won't have to work in a kitchen part time, and I can spend more time creating awesome rewards for y'all. Videos, technique troubleshooting, custom mouthguards and athletic clothes, who knows!

This is when things get really cool, and more classes can be added to the schedule.
