What is Patreon and why do you use it?

Hero, I'm so excited to use this platform so that we can connect and take our learning together to the next level! This is a place for those who want to support what I’m doing so that I can continue to support what you’re doing: learning to live a life of greater meaning, joy, human connection, and personal growth.

If you're not familiar with Patreon, the concept is that you support a creator financially for each piece of valuable content they create for you OR on a fixed monthly basis. In my case, it's videos, podcasts, and online courses about Judaism and its wisdom, traditions, and people.

I believe in this concept with all my heart. It's helping teachers and creators like me bring more value to the world by making it financially sustainable long-term. Please consider supporting my work with a $5 per month (or however you much you like).

How does it work?

Every month I intend to publish about 12 YouTube educational videos to the Rabbi John Carrier YouTube channel, as well as 4 podcast episodes of The Jewcurious Show to iTunes, Stitcher, and Google Play. These are (and always will be) shared for free and without advertisements for anyone who wants or needs them. I'm also developing free and tuition-based online courses to go deeper on several Jewish topics.

You pay a flat, monthly fee via Patreon to contribute to the resources it takes to produce all that content, and as a thank-you, you get access to some cool perks and exclusive online classes, which you can see on this page.

Where does my money go?

Your support enables me to invest into producing free YouTube videos and podcast episodes for Jewcurious people just like you: people considering conversion to Judaism, people returning to Judaism later in life, Christians interested in their faith's Hebrew roots, and spiritual seekers of all sorts.

As you know, it takes time and resources to create content, both of which require money. Your support lets me focus on making the most valuable content for you that I possibly can instead of spending as much time focusing on the financial side of how to deliver it to you. That way, I can avoid enabling advertising which might be inappropriate...like, say, having a video about Kosher dietary laws with a pop-up ad for bacon cheeseburgers.

Plus, if the videos, podcasts, or other content I've shared in the past has helped you in any way, please know that you are not alone, and future content can help other people just like you, too! I have faith that whatever challenges you've overcome, you'll want to help others overcome similar challenges.

It also helps me replace broken A/V equipment, produce higher-quality videos and podcast episodes, and free up some of my time to do other important things, like investing time into my wife and kids!

Aw, shucks. I can't afford to support this.

No problem at all! Please don't become a patron if you're low on money or are struggling financially. I know what that feels like - there were a few times when I took my kids to Whole Foods for "sample dinner" - and I want you to take care of your most important priorities first.

I will continue to make videos and podcast episodes, totally free and without advertisements, that I hope will help you get more out of your life and your spiritual journey, regardless of your circumstances, with no expectation of reciprocation.

I have faith that your circumstances will improve, and I trust that you will pay it forward in the time and manner that is right for you, whether it's supporting the work of this community, or in some other way.

Who are you?

(This is my family at Sequoia National Park, in front of General Sherman, the biggest tree in the world. I'm the big gorilla in the Superman shirt.)

My name is John Carrier, and I was ordained as a rabbi in 2014 at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, California, a seminary in the Conservative movement of Judaism. (That's "Conservative" in the religious sense - not necessarily political.)

Though I'm happy to live in Southern California, I am a proud "son of the Republic" of Texas, where I was born, and I've lived all over the country, from Appalachia to New England to Minnesota, with some time spent studying in Israel as well.

Also, if "John Carrier" doesn't sound like a Jewish name to you, well...it is now. I converted to Judaism in 2000, and since I became a rabbi, I've had a passion for making Judaism accessible for people who are new to it AND for people who are coming back to it as adults.

Shortly after ordination and taking a pulpit in Burbank, California, I started making YouTube videos, and later, podcasts, to teach basic (and not-so-basic) Jewish subjects to adult learners in a fun, accessible way. Since then, I've shared over a hundred videos that have reach thousands of people in 186 countries.

As of August 2018, I'll be saying farewell to my congregational duties to focus full-time on creating online content for Jewcurious people like you.

Thank you for your support! It means the world to me. First: Because it's you, Hero. I'm grateful that I've been able to help you, and I'm even more grateful for your support in helping more people just like you. Second: Because it means we can build a community that supports Jewish learning online together, and I'm excited to see what we build together looks like!
Tiers
Five
$5 or more per month
For starters, if you like my videos and podcast, you may love getting early access to:
  • rough-cuts of audio and video,
  • maybe some bloopers, and
  • other "DVD extras"-type stuff.

All these will be available via "Patron Only" posts here on Patreon.

Plus, you get a "five" from me, because I'm so psyched to have you as a part of this community. So gimme five, Hero. There, back atcha.

Come on, don't leave me hangin'!

Chai
$18 or more per month
(Pronounced like the greeting "Hi" - only if you were clearing your throat at the time you said it.)

In the Hebrew language, like with Roman numerals, numbers are written with Hebrew letters, and 18 written in Hebrew happens to spell the word for "life" - pronounced Chai. For this reason, Jews often make donations in increments and multiples of the number 18.

One thing that sustains life is the study of Torah, so at this level you get:

  • Same bennies as Five, plus
  • A monthly, interactive online lesson (60+ minutes) on a topic announced in advance, with a live feed that allows Q&A.

...and access to the replay of that and other all other lessons for as long as you are a Chai-level Patron.

NOTE: This level is limited to the first 36 Chai Patrons who sign up, so that we can connect with as many Heroes and answer as many questions LIVE as possible.

Chai Five!
$90 or more per month
Supporters at this level truly deserve a Chai Five! 90 = 18 (Chai) x 5...Get it?

At this level, you get:

  • All the bennies of Five and Chai, plus
  • A weekly interactive online lesson (60+ minutes) on the Torah portion of the week, with a live feed that allows Q&A
  • Occasional bonus lessons, for a total of 5 lessons per month

...and access to the replay of those lessons and all archived lessons for as long as you are a Chai Five Patron.

Not to mention: A crisp Chai Five from me (virtually speaking, of course).

NOTE: This level of support is limited to the first 18 Chai Five Patrons who sign up, so that we can keep our class small, and everyone in it gets heard & helped.

Founder
$180 or more per month
Whoa. Seriously? Whoa.

Support at this level really helps me get the job done of delivering top-notch Jewish educational material to people around the world, and you should be acknowledged and rewarded for what you really are: A Founder of a new kind of digital school and online community.

At this level, Founder, you get:

  • ALL the bennies of prior levels (early access, monthly lessons, weekly lessons, a crisp Chai Five), plus
  • A monthly one-on-one spiritual mentoring call with me (up to 60 minutes) to discuss whatever you need help with most

...which is impossible for me guarantee on a monthly basis to do with everyone who enjoys my free content or participates in group classes.

However: for the first 10 Founders who step up to create a new kind of Jewish learning, I'll make an exception. Thank you.

Goals
8 of 10 patrons
Let's make a minyan! In Jewish worship, there are certain prayers and rituals that have a level of holiness such that they are only repeated in the presence of a community, and the Sages of our tradition declared that 10 people is the minimum number to be considered a "community." Minyan is Hebrew for "quorum" or this minimum threshold of 10 people. This would also cover the cost of my video and audio editing software. Would YOU like to be part of our holy community?
