Rachelle Abellar is creating zines, podcasts, and community

Hi! I'm Rachelle and I’m a fat queer Filipino living in Seattle with my cat, Bijou. I’m also a zine creator, podcaster, and community organizer.

I run Archive Six, a small press and zine distro, out of my bedroom. I carry work centered around art, social justice, QTPOC, fat activism, and survival.

My own zines and books include:
  • Self Care Zine (editor & contributor)
  • Self Care Zine: Food (editor & contributor)
  • Self Care Journal (creator)
  • Fat Acceptance 101 (creator)
  • Dear Fatty: Letters to My Younger Self (editor & contributor)
  • Big-Bellied Merbabes Coloring Book (creator)
  • The Little Book of Big Babes (editor & contributor)
  • Miss Fisher’s Activity Book (creator)
  • Slice Slice Baby (editor & contributor)

I lend my vocal fry to 2 podcasts: Terrace House Friends (sadly on indefinite hiatus) and That’s Cool! I have 2 other podcasts in the works that will focus on the fat experience and I’m really excited to start working on them!

I am also the founder and event coordinator for PNW Fattitude, a volunteer-run group aimed at fostering community by organizing fat-positive events in the Pacific Northwest. Some events we’ve organized in the past include clothing swaps, weekend retreats, brunches, picnics, fancy dinners, and karaoke nights.

I decided to create a Patreon to support not only my work but to also support my own survival.

Most of my Archive Six earnings come from vending at shows and go right back into covering any show/travel costs, printing zines, and restocking the shop. I'm lucky if I break even at shows, to be honest. But I got into the small press life because I enjoy it, not to make a profit, so it's not really income I've ever allowed myself to depend on.

(ETA 10/3/18) I am also currently unemployed, having just left a very toxic work environment. I left for many reasons, one being that they consistently failed to pay me -- at the time of this edit, they still owe me an entire month of wages.

Unfortunately, the cost of living as a fat brown disabled person in Seattle has become so tremendously high that I can no longer support myself. (The cost of my rent alone has doubled since I first moved to Seattle 3 years ago!!) As a result, I've had to hustle extra hard to chase down freelance design gigs, put a bunch of projects on hold, stop taking my meds, and take a break from going to therapy. The loss of the last two things due to financial hardship have made surviving day to day a real struggle and I'm hoping this Patreon will help me regain some stability and strength in my life.

By becoming a patron, you will be freeing up the time and bandwidth I would normally spend on freelance work, allowing me to devote more energy to projects that are important to me and to my community. You will also be helping me cover costs related to keeping me alive and managing my pain. (For a more detailed breakdown of where your money will go, please keep reading!)

For full transparency, your generosity will go toward the following:
  • Archive Six
    • Printing costs
    • Show tabling fees
    • Show-related travel costs
    • Art and office supplies
    • Web hosting
  • PNW Fattitude
    • Marketing materials
    • Web hosting
  • Podcasting
    • Hosting
    • Recording equipment
  • Miscellaneous Costs
    • Commissioning artwork or hiring a contractor
    • Unforeseen shipping costs
  • Keeping me alive and well
    • Medications
    • Physical therapy
    • Psychotherapy
    • Mobility aids and equipment
    • Emergencies

Dear Fatty (I'm turning it into a book and a podcast!!!), Big-Bellied Merbabes 2, a fat-centric podcast (title TBA), a "Life Hacks for Fatties" zine, new koozies, and enamel pins!

All physical rewards will be shipped via First Class USPS. Please note estimated arrival times after being shipped out: U.S. 1 week, Canada 2-3 weeks, International 3-4 weeks.

This is not a requirement but if you are an international patron pledging at a tier that includes physical rewards, please consider kicking in a few extra bucks to help with shipping. It would be greatly appreciated!! <3

If you enjoy my content or have benefited from my community work, I hope you will consider becoming a patron. But please only give what is practical to you. If a monthly contribution doesn't make sense for you right now, you can also make a one time donation via Venmo @Rachelle-Abellar. Even $1 makes a difference! And always, any signal boosting on social media is happily accepted and encouraged.

Thank you so much! You help make the work I do possible and I am eternally grateful for your support.
