What the hell is a Reckstar?
If you’ve never heard of it, Reckstar is a webcomic that follows two hapless couriers as they bumble their way across a melting pot galaxy.
THADE RECKSTAR is the hero of our story. Really.
His name is even in the title.
FINN WYOMING thinks he’s the hero of our story.
Also called “Finn Thunderstealer” and “Dumb Quixote”
when Thade doesn’t think he’s listening.
Together, they will explore alien worlds that look an awful lot like Southern California, battle strange beings that honestly just wanted to be left alone, and save princesses who HATE being called “princess” and have no interest in being saved.
These are their adventures!
Reckstar is a love letter to space opera, planetary romance, science fantasy, and any other label you can think of for stories about heroic heroes doing cool stuff in space.
It’s written by Joey Cruz, drawn-colored-lettered by the amazing Michelle Nguyen, and updates every Tuesday at ReckstarComic.com!
So, what’s all this about?I’m glad you asked. We’ve created this page as a way for people who enjoy our comic to support us! With money!
Patreon is similar to Kickstarter in that it is a crowd-funding platform. But instead of pledging one lump sum to a single project, as you would on Kickstarter, Patreon lets you pledge smaller, incremental amounts to an ongoing project, like… say… for instance… a webcomic.
And where does this money go?
In the sidebar on this page, you can see how much money the comic is making from patron donations, and below that, a list of the Goals we hope to achieve with that money (which we will continually add to as new goals occur to us).
Some will be situational and sort of on a moving scale, like paying for tables at conventions and covering merchandise and printing costs. Others will be personal milestones, like making the website self-sustaining and, the ultimate end-goal, making it us-sustaining. We want this to be our profession, so the more money we make, the closer that comes to a reality. The goals are simply a way of letting you know how your generosity is affecting our lives.
As more goals are met, we'll be looking for opportunities to give back to our patrons. For instance, when we pass the point where printing peripheral merchandise like posters, stickers, prints, bookmarks and the like are fully covered by donations, those items could become free swag for our Clubhouse Members at conventions.
(What's the Clubhouse you ask? Check out the Rewards section below!)
Does this mean I have to pay for your webcomic now?
Nope! Not at all.
We’re giving Reckstar away for free. It’s a gift. For you! You should feel no obligation whatsoever to give us money for it. We’re making this comic because we love it, and will continue to do so for as long as we possibly can, even if we don’t make a single red cent.
We’re putting out the Patreon hat because, as fun and fulfilling as it is, making comics is hard work. It takes time and effort (did you notice Michelle is pulling TRIPLE duty on this book?) and those things are at a premium when you have a whole other job (or multiple jobs) keeping the roof over your head, as Michelle and I both do.
Ultimately, we want to make comics our full time job. That means making money off of our work. But we don’t want to deprive people of the port-in-a-storm free entertainment can be. I know free webcomics have helped me through more than my share of thin months (hell, they still do), and I know that when I’m able, I like to give a little back to the projects and creators who kept my spirits up for nothing at all.
So, we’ve created this Patreon.
If you can give? Awesome. Beautiful. We love and appreciate you, and hey, we’ll even throw some extra cool stuff your way. (Again, see the Rewards section below.)
But if you can’t give? Guess what -- we love and appreciate you anyway. You’re reading this, which means you know our comic, and if you’ve gotten this far into my ramblings, it probably means you like our comic, and just knowing that you’re out there inspires us to continue creating.
Really -- I’m really not kidding. We love each and every person who reads our comic. At the time of this writing, that's a relatively small number. But as more of you tune in, just know that you mean the world to us, just being there, and you don’t need to give us anything in return.
Give only if you can, if you’re inspired to. And if not, please continue to enjoy the comic, spread the word, and join us on our adventure. :)
...Well, that was disgustingly sappy and now I’m not sure I want to support you anymore.
Don’t be an asshole, hypothetical-question-asker.
