The Project

Hypervideo—online video annotated with time-based links and other widgets—is on the rise. It opens up a world of immersive storytelling, such as choose-your-own-story films, which boast high audience engagement. Frustratingly, there is no free, standardized solution for creating and distributing hypervideo in active development. Current offerings are proprietary, requiring recurring payments and vendor lock-in to use. This hinders cash-strapped visual artists, and silos metadata that could be useful in search and beyond.

Enter RedBlue. We enable more people to produce hypervideo by democratizing the technology behind it. We author an open specification, HVML (Hypervideo Markup Language), which aims to be the HTML of video. In conjunction, we develop the RedBlue JavaScript player, which brings the immersive features of HVML to any website.

Functionality

For new videos only

(has to be planned for at the content production stage)

  • Choose Your Own Story (CYOS): stories with multiple timelines and alternate endings
  • Switching between alternate synchronized video streams at-will
  • Anything else with heavy reliance on user input

For new or existing videos:

  • Branded video player
  • Link to external webpages
  • Link internally to other videos that load within the same player
  • In-video CTAs such as donation, newsletter signup, polling, etc.
  • Tag people, products, music, and locations that occur within the video
  • Add menus and chapters à la DVD/Blu-ray
  • Pop-up video: information boxes with trivia, commentary, etc.
  • Contextualization: display explanatory content (e.g. a Wikipedia article) in a sidebar
  • Your choice of video hosting: YouTube, Vimeo, or self-hosted. (The actual interactive player would have to be on your own website though.)

These core offerings are completely free to download and use (“free” as in both gratis and libre). Your patronage helps us to continue providing it for free, by helping us cover labor and overhead costs.
