Red Wedge is a socialist publication of arts and culture. We cover all artistic media and realms of creativity – visual art, film, theater, literature, poetry, music and more – from an unapologetically Marxist viewpoint. Run by an editorial collective of artists and writers, we publish critical essays, reviews, poetry, fiction, and artwork, both online and in our print journal. To date we have published hundreds of pieces online, two pamphlets, and five print issues. We have also presented panels and workshops at several Historical Materialism conferences and the Left Forum.

Our sixth issue, to be released in fall of 2018, is our longest and most thorough yet, coming in at well over 120 pages. We are also looking to publish poetry chapbooks and more pamphlets, including one on art, displacement and gentrification.

At a time when socialist and radical ideas are experiencing a resurgence, we fervently believe that human creativity and expression have something vital to teach us in the struggle for a fundamentally different world. We seek to help connect artists, musicians, writers and creatives of all stripes who also want to see this world realized. Standing in the tradition of the surrealists, the situationists, the Black Arts Movement, Rock Against Racism and many other brilliant radical aesthetic legacies, we seek to rebuild what we and others call a “popular avant-garde,” an artistic movement that refuses to have its visions diminished by the realities of exploitation and oppression.

Currently, we are the only English-language publication dedicated to examining all of the arts from a socialist perspective. It is a task we relish, but also a daunting one. A labor of love this may be, but it is still labor. And so we come to you, our readers, for support.

The world of publishing has changed drastically in the last decade. This is truer for nobody more than it is for publications with dissident views. There are more avenues for printing and shipping, but distribution and reaching a wider audience is ever more difficult. A stable source of funding is also a constant concern.

Hence Patreon, a solid platform for not just creating a consistent income, but also to help build connections between various like-minded communities. We are shifting more focus to this page in order to better take advantage of these tools, and, hopefully, to foment greater connection between radical anti-capitalist artists, writers, poets, musicians, and activists.

We are tailoring our rewards to that end. All those who donate a monthly sum will have access to patron-exclusive content, posted here every week. They will also receive subscriptions (digital or hard copy depending on their level of donation) to the Red Wedge print journal.

Those interested in keeping the conversation going after each piece’s publication can donate ten dollars or more a month and be added to a Red Wedge community Facebook group designed to help writers, activists, artists and supporters meet and engage. The meaning of any work evolves over time, changing and morphing with different interpretations and events, potentially opening up the room for newer and more prescient works, for which we believe this group will allow.

Our collective belief is that we can do something both original and urgent. We invite you to come along and see what that might be.
