Who I am

Hi there. I'm Renee and I write plays and other things. Nice to meet you!

My plays include The Religion Thing (2013 nominee for the Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play), Short Order Stories (2007 recipient of the Charles MacArthur Award), G-d’s Honest TruthOur National Museum of the Unforeseen TragedyThe Mating of Angela WeissBleedThe 12 Days of Christmas, and others. My plays have been produced, developed, and commissioned by Theater J, The Welders, Charter Theater, Geva Theatre, Project Y, Pinky Swear Productions, Adventure Theatre, Doorway Arts Ensemble, The Jewish Plays Project, and the Source Theatre Festival.

Short Order Stories and The 12 Days of Christmas are published by Dramatic Publishing. Some of my short plays are published in Plays of the Dramathon.

And I'm a proud founding member of The Welders.

How I became a playwright

The night I became a playwright, I was onstage in front of a paying audience and had no idea what I was going to say. The night I became a playwright, the lights rose, I entered from stage right, and I made up a story that made an audience laugh.

Everything I learned about playwriting I learned first by performing improv--first with Washington Improv Theater, then with Dropping the Cow, a sketch and improv company I co-founded, then with Precipice Improv. And improv taught me this: If you don't engage with your audience...if you don't collaborate with your improv cast mates...you're toast. A cold, dry piece of lonely toast.

Why I'm on Patreon

I'm here because writing's solitary and I'd like your company--and support!-- while I'm doing a few things:
  • Finishing a major revision of an immersive theater piece, Our National Museum of the Unforeseen Tragedy
  • Writing a screenplay based on Warriors, a 10-minute play I wrote in 2009
  • Writing the first draft of 52 Pickup, a collection of flash fiction

My big goal? To write full-time and say goodbye to my day job. I'm playing the long game. So please take a look at the support levels over there in the sidebar and jump in the game, yeah?

What's with the food metaphors as reward levels?

I like to eat. I like to cook.

It is not an exaggeration to say that food is a driving force in my life. I used to be 60 pounds heavier. Pretty much all of that sneaks its way into whatever I'm writing.

The photo up there in the header is from the world premiere of Short Order Stories. It was set in a diner. The actors in that photo are Anne Veal and Andy Brownstein and they are brilliant.

All this to say...

Thank you. I'm glad you're here.
