Who we are, and what we do

The Republic of Consciousness is the only arts organisation in the world that solely supports and promotes small presses dedicated to "hardcore literary fiction and gorgeous prose".

In 2016, we founded the Republic of Consciousness Prize for Small Presses. In our first two years, we longlisted 24 publishers from 11 towns and cities across the UK & Ireland. When we announce our next winner in Spring 2019, we will have awarded over £30,000 to small presses and authors.

This year, we want to expand and find a way to support and promote small presses throughout the year, not just in the few months around the prize announcement. So, we're starting a monthly podcast dedicated entirely to small presses, with reviews, readings and interviews. Neil Griffiths and Jonathan McAloon will be chatting with a whole host of small press figures - with a publisher of the month, reviews from the best critics around today, readings from new books and reports from literary events, this will be the place to get all your small press news. Also, we’ve made the increasingly eccentric decision to actually pay our contributors. We also intend to pay the expenses of presses and writers who appear.

The money!

We are supported by various sponsors: for the Prize we have teamed up with The University of East Anglia and The Times Literary Supplement, whilst the podcast is supported by the University of Westminster. We have also received Arts Council funding.
However, this allows us to keep the lights on, without being able to take the next step forward. We are hoping to raise money through Patreon to sustainably grow and be able to pay contributors to the podcast and offer more substantive rewards to our prizewinners and shortlistees. We need support to give support!

To begin with, 50% of the Patreon contributions to will go towards the prize fund for the prize, and 50% will support the Podcast.

Every donation over $1.50 (£1) will make the donor a Citizen of the Republic. Basically, this means you will entered into our monthly raffle draw which takes place on the first Friday of each month. The winner will be able to select a prize from our rotating set of rewards, which are kindly donated by our colleagues and pals, and will be slightly different each month. International restrictions might apply, but we will do our best to be accommodating, wherever the winner lives.

RAFFLE!

The next prize draw will be on Friday 4th January. Sign up by the end of December to be in with a shot of winning one of the prizes below.
The winner will be able to choose one prize from the following list:

  • A £25 book voucher to be spent exclusively at the London Review Bookshop, based in swinging Bloomsbury in fashionable Central London.

  • A complete set of Keshiki chapbooks from Strangers Press - new voices coming out of Japan. Strangers Press are part of the UEA Publishing Project, who sponsor the Republic of Consciousness Prize.

  • A set of the first two anthologies published by the splendid 3 of Cups Press, On Anxiety and On Bodies.

 .
We will announce the winner on Twitter and on our monthly newsletter, and will send them an email just to make sure they get the happy news.
