About Richard Tuschman

Hi, I am a fine art photographer based in New York City. I collaborate with a small team of actors and stylists to create cinematic, fictional photographic narratives. These pictures explore the complexities and emotional nuances of the human condition and relationships. My primary influences include the history of western art and photography, international cinema, and a wide range of literature.

Perhaps the most unusual feature of my process is that the sets featured in the pictures are actually dollhouse size dioramas that I design, build, and paint in my studio. I photograph the model/actors separately. I then seamlessly integrate them into the scenes via computer.

I first explored this genre in my series, Hopper Meditations, completed in 2013, which I describe as a personal photographic response to the paintings of Edward Hopper. The project received wide online attention, and since then my work has received critical acclaim from publications such as The Huffington Post, Slate, The Guardian, Der Spiegel and Vice, as well as awards from LensCulture, PhotoLucida’s Critical Mass, International Photo Awards, and American Photography. In 2016 I was named New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Photography.

My projects are both time and labor-intensive. My most recent project, the photographic memoir My Childhood Reassembled, took over four years to complete. I am asking for your support on Patreon so that I can devote myself full-time to making this work. By joining my community here, you will become my partner in creating my current and future projects, and I would love to have you along on my journey. As a partner/member, you will have access to my creative process and progress, not available anywhere else. I look forward to sharing exclusive, regular behind-the-scenes features, along with technical tips on photography, lighting, Photoshop, creating miniatures, and more.
