About Right To Know
At Right To Know, we believe making more documents available about how government makes decisions and spends money strengthens our democracy.
We pursue transparency in a variety of different ways:
- We submit hundreds of requests every year and post as many records as we can to our publishing website over at: www.thestory.ie. We do this using the Freedom of Information Act, the Access to Information on the Environment (AIE) regulations, and other information access regimes.
- We appeal cases when needed, first to the Information Commissioner (or OCEI), and to the courts if needs be. These cost money. Every internal review costs €30 (free for AIE), while each appeal to the Information Commissioner costs €50. You can probably imagine what's involved when we have to go to court!
- We post advice on how to make requests and provide assistance, when possible, to people making requests.
Right to Know can only do this work with the support of our readers. We receive no government funding and are 100% reliant on the generosity of our supporters.
Many Patreon accounts have different tiers with different levels of access depending on the level of support provided.
At Right to Know, we treat information by default as public and we like to make it available to everybody at the same time, irrespective of means.
Our tiers are there to give you an opportunity to support us in whatever way you can.
If you want to make an even larger contribution, you can find out how over at www.thestory.ie
