Ten year-old Laertes is saved by Ottoman commander Hassan. Baba the Nubian eunuch puts Laertes in girls' clothes and calls him Leila. Protected by Hassan and Baba, Leila grows to love Hassan but the world judges them master and "harem slave" — which is the story Byron chose to tell in his poem.

In Lord Byron's The Giaour (1813), harem slave Leila is drowned as an adulteress. Her lover the Giaour ("infidel") kills her master Hassan in revenge, and is cursed to become a vampire.

In the 200 years since its publication, The Giaour spawned the vampire gothic genre and came to symbolize, via Delacroix's paintings, the lethal conflict between the East and the West as represented by its two male protagonists: one Muslim, the other, Christian – the giaour, or "the infidel" of the title. Yet Leila, at the center of all this passion, is entirely silent and strangely bloodless – until we consider a new, queer reading of the poem that unlocks her true identity.

Love, blood, karmic retribution – The Giaour is Byron meets kabuki, in which Leila ceases to be a silent victim of "Oriental" violence against women, and Hassan emerges as a gay Muslim romantic hero.

The feature film The Giaourthanks to you lovely people who have supported us – is set to begin principal photography in 2018–19. I have just decided to add a new, $1 tier to cover the last few months of preproduction (travel and personnel costs) before the hard preproduction begins.

A little bit about me, Rika Ohara, the Writer/Director: When I was a teenage manga artist in Japan, the great Osamu Tezuka himself sent me an editor of a new magazine he was then spearheading. When this editor told me my work was "too artsy," I decided to study art instead. I have exhibited my performance and media works internationally before making my first feature film The Heart of No Place, the winner of the Best Film at London Independent Film Festival (2010).
