This is an experiment, and it comes with promises.
I have been working on cultural product and cultural commentary in some form for a good twenty years now, and I've struggled to keep my head above water in traditional avenues of performance, album sales, touring, merchandising, and freelance writing. One thing I have learned is that I am not very good at business.
Another is that I AM very good at LOTS of other things, or at least very good at making well-intentioned strangers believe that I am, which is all that really matters.
I'm in what I hope is the home stretch of a new album, which I'm going to release more or less traditionally, or at least in probably just about the same traditional way that I've released my previous 5 albums. It will exist as a discrete Cultural Product, and you will be able to purchase or steal it as you wish.
But I have SO MUCH OTHER PRODUCT TO GIVE YOU! And I'm tired of waiting for my actions to catch up with my ambitions - I have about a dozen albums planned out, and songs in various stages of completion slated for each of them. Over a hundred songs, with words and concepts - not counting hundreds of musical starting points by myself or other collaborators, collecting dust in my archives.
I want to give it to you. I want to spend all year cleaning out my dragon roost and filling up your pockets with the treasures I have kept hidden, some for over a decade.
I want to give you complete songs, demos, covers, remixes, mixtapes, EPs, collaborations, experiments, successes, failures, everything worth anything. I want to tour to where you live. I want to make you podcasts where I curate works from friends and strangers, and say things in my rich, mellifluous quasi-baritone. I want to write you essays of substance, not just half-baked social media scribblings... but I do ALSO want to write you half-baked social media scribblings.
And I want your feedback and participation. And whatever form of support you can muster - if that's a buck or three per month, that could really help me. If it's just telling people about my work, putting it on playlists, coming to see me when I perform in your town, scratching my name & phone number in a bathroom stall... that's great too, mom.
I think this patreon thing could help me do all of the above. I'm still working out the format. I'll refine the vision as I go along, seeing what works. Right now, I'm committing myself to offering you four previously unheard Cultural Products ("songs") per month in 2015, one podcast, and two substantive blog posts.
I'll add to that offer as I figure out what Patreon specifically facilitates - google hangouts, community posts, stuff like that? Sure, probably. Let's give it a shot.
Thank you for believing in me and what I do, to whatever extent that can be considered accurate,

p.s. oh it is also permitted to patronize me a buck a month or something if you just like the way I tell off jerks on the internet. i do lots of cool stuff. it's unreal.
