If you are like me, when it comes to art, you know what you like.
If the art moves you that’s all that matters. You don’t have to know anything about art other than knowing what you like. So if you’ve thought of collecting art, little by little, to eventually fill your home with beauty, here’s a great way to help you become the art collector you always thought you could be.
Hi, I'm Robert Lewis. Have you seen those artists standing at an easel alongside the road, or at the beach or mountains, with a big straw hat and brush in hand? Then you've probably seen me, especially if you've been in Monterey, California. I am a landscape (and still life) painter, what we call "plein air" painting, a fancy shmancy word for painting outside...painting, and finishing, outside.
If you like my work, become a patron. An art patron. Start building your collection now. My rewards help you do that.
Let me share this artistic process with you over the coming months and, in the process, you can begin to build your collection. There are more paintings to be done and more exhibits to be planned. Your support is vital to my ongoing work. It’s a great journey and I hope you come along with me!
Here’s how it works. Every patron has access to me through media and access to all of my patron-only videos, where I discuss my feelings on the pursuit of painting and share some of my processes and techniques.
And my patrons receive substantial discounts on any paintings they choose to purchase. Take a look at my rewards to see how I've crafted a unique way for you to build your collection of my work.
More about My Oil Paintings
Plein air painting is like an endurance sport in a way. You contend with nature and your own body and mind under difficult circumstances to score a goal. In this case, the goal of a good painting. You paint and finish your painting on location in a single sitting. Challenging! The result can be exciting and refreshing, a piece of art that really captures the moment. I've been doing this for a long time and I've been in galleries, had my own gallery, done painting competitions, and shows. Dedication and hard work, sometimes sweat and sore muscles, sunburns and scrapes, prove that all plein air artists are a little crazy. We've got this idea that the challenge of it is rewarding and, well, it certainly is. A great satisfaction to know you've fought a good fight for the sake of art, and, no matter how the painting turns out that day, you get back out there and do it again.
Studio Paintings
Plein air is not the whole story. I also do larger work in the studio based on the plein air work. That's how plein air began, as smaller oil sketches for larger studio pieces. Some of my larger pieces are six foot by eight foot.
Still Life Paintings
One of my favorite kinds of painting is still life and I've done a lot of it. I suppose as I get older I may have to do more and more still life. That's good with me. Still life has the special quality of inferring the human presence and so a bowl of apples, for example, is not just a bowl of apples but a collection of objects that a person has arranged. A good still life is like a short story.
Become My Next Patron
Take a look through my work and see if it moves you. I try to be true to the essence of the scene without obsessing over details. Every piece is painted on canvas in oil paints. I appreciate and thank all the many patrons I've had over the years. Selling is important to an artist but painting is most important. So I focus on painting, knowing that I don't need to worry about selling if I have done my work as a painter. Patrons always come along to encourage and support and become my friends.
