Rob Muhlestein is creating SkilStak

Since 2013 I have been helping motivated learners of all ages, backgrounds, creeds, and capacities learn coding, tech, and life skills that match their interests, resources, and goals.

After a lot of deliberation I've decided to release all my material, tools, and lessons-learned through skilstak.io, a fun, opinionated progressive web app full of terms, tips, tutorials, tests, and titles for new technologists. (I swear the alliteration was not fully intentional.)

What is SkilStak?

SkilStak is the name of the small company I formed to help others learn in an organized way. The name comes from a moment in my own career when I created a small app for myself to help measure, manage, and track my own learning while at IBM.

skilstak.io is my work toward releasing this app to everyone else. Right now it is an opinionated, locally searchable, TL;DR; of tech learning combined with tutorials, a full glossary of terms, and a fair amount of tech pop culture and Easter eggs to keep it fun. It is sort of like having StackExchange, Quora, GitHub, Kindle, and a little Google all in a light-weight progressive web app that can be used even offline. The content contained represents literally thousands of hours of writing, design, and research. It has become an essential tool for SkilStak members and I know it can help others.

First I want to get all the content into skilstak.io. Then I want to add the visual personal learning tools to track that learning and apply data science, AI, and a conversational user interface to provide a mobile-enabled smart learning bot that helps you learn anything and everything we add to it, even make intelligent recommendations as you navigate the jungle that is tech learning. I already have the SkilBot protocol done and need to eventually integrate it.

I also started the sustainable, open, interactive, learning (SOIL) initiative to promote a standard for learning content that can actually keep up with the pace of change. I look forward to presenting it at ISTE and NCTIES to promote the cause of truly open, relevant learning content.

I am also integrating skilstak.io with something I'll calling tech geo-caching that uses Raspberry Pis and other electronics to go on a technology treasure hunt of hackable challenges in a game-like fashion. The skilstak.io already has some of this built into it. Eventually the standard for creating such caches could grow into the official geo-caching site and provide extra learning potential to an already great way to get geeks outside.

Why support me?

I specifically need financial help to to keep working on this full time. I am already working for private schools to help pay the bills and exploring the many offers to create corporate training materials, but I do not want to lose the momentum as I spread the successful lessons I have learned and the content for others to learn.

I started several books only to conclude any book would be outdated as soon as it went to print. So I created the next best thing, and interactive book built with VuePress that can contain live assessments, components, rich-media, and is printer-friendly so any lesson or page can be immediately printed for use in the classroom. Rather than put it all behind a paywall or kill more trees unnecessarily I chose this route. I'm confident enough of you out there will agree this is the best way to approach educational content.

The backer tier is for basic membership and provides the following benefits:
  • a t-shirt once a year,
  • some stickers,

A sponsor is contributing because they want to see SkilStak continue to succeed and add new material and approaches.

Benefactor

A benefactor is someone with the means and desire to sponsor a single semi-private student. For every benefactor I will identify and enroll a motivated, deserving student for eight weeks. and post about it here as well as on skilstak.io. I will setup a system of nomination as well to allow others who know deserving individuals to be submitted.

Patron

A patron is a benefactor who sponsors two students instead of one providing for one full semi-private class.

For every benefactor I will identify and register one deserving, motivated individual.

For every patron I will do the same for two individuals.

Benefactors and patrons can optionally meet the individuals they directly sponsor or receive periodic updates on their progress.
