Solidarity Merchandise

reward item
reward item
$25
per month
  • T-shirt with a Patreon exclusive design after 3 consecutive monthly payments of $25. This reward is only available for this tier.
  • VIP admission to live events such as performances and book readings
  • And everything in the previous tiers

Joining this tier means that after three consecutively paid months, you will be receiving as a reward exclusive merch from me that you can't buy anywhere else. For the $25 Merch tier, you will be receiving a shirt as the reward in addition to all the benefits of the previous tiers.

How it Works: Basically, you just need to make 3 consecutive monthly payments while enrolled in one of the merch tiers to qualify for that item. Any time you join my Patreon, you will be charged upfront for the cost of the tier ($25) the same day and this will count as the first payment. Every month after, you will be charged on the 1st of the following month.

For example, if you join on March 25th, you will be charged $25 the same day. On April 1st, you will be charged $25 again and will count towards the second consecutive payment and so on. Unfortunately, this is how it works on Patreon so I hope this isn't too complicated.

If you're currently a paying member in a non-merch tier, you can also upgrade to a merch tier to start qualifying for the merch. You will pay the difference from the tier you are currently at and this should start you on the first consecutive payment towards the reward.

Every order will be tracked and shipped through Patreon and received as a reward, so there is no separate purchase necessary. If you ever have any issues or questions about how this all works, feel free to message me!

About Rocky Rivera

Who am I?
My name is Krish de Leon aka Rocky Rivera, rapper, writer, author and Mom of two. I’m a former hip hop journalist who just released her first of many books entitled Snakeskin. I have a new project on Beatrock Music, which I haven’t released anything since 2015.

I grew up in the Bay Area, like many working class families of color in the Nineties. As I got older and Tech moved in, many of my friends and families have been gentrified out of my community. I was lucky enough to find a rent-controlled apartment in Oakland, and because of that, am able to still work on my music and serve my community through my art. If I leave the Bay Area, and especially if I leave my hometown of San Francisco, I’m never coming back. Tech is an important part of my strategy and I want Twitter, YouTube and Google to pay me back for displacing my family. I plan on using the very same tools of technology to level the playing field, and with your help, balance the scales towards equity in community and the arts.

My number one challenge as an independent artist is to get listeners away from a transactional model of music and into a sustainable and equitable model of investment into community arts by supporting artists directly. This aligns with social justice theory because it provides a multi-tiered and equitable way for folks to receive valuable digital content at their affordability level, while also supporting a commercial-free message.

This is most important in the field of journalism, where content always caters to the advertisers and owners of media conglomerates. Whether it’s a magazine like Vice or a station like Fox News, they are all owned by Rupert Murdoch and designed to sell publications as a product, not just a way to stay informed. Supporting independent journalism means supporting independent journalists who want to uplift the stories of everyday people who have been marginalized by capitalist media.

Why is Patreon so important to me as an artist today?

Patreon is absolutely important to me as an artist because it gives me 100% creative control and values my contribution upfront; it begins as an act of good faith. Because I don’t have to rely on industry gatekeepers, I am free to make the music I want and challenge the very systems that keep artists like me under the radar. And once successful, I am demonstrating that investing in BIPOC women artists is an equitable way to ensure our contributions are seen and not marginalized.

The truth is, what I’ve been able to give you, from the quality of my beats and production, to the quality of each one of my videos, has been paid for and financed myself. After ten years in the game, I have been one of the most consistent and highest-quality independent artists and female emcees in the game. Many have you asked what it takes to keep going in this economy and now I need you to help me continue to make art and serve the people.

How does Patreon benefit fans and members that join? What can they expect?

Once you join, you will have access to the archives and unreleased content directly from Rocky Rivera. All tiers will receive access to the weekly blog updates and op-ed essays around arts & pop culture, along with studio sessions for upcoming music projects and our monthly Rock&Roz podcast. Joining up will increase your access to exclusive merchandise including stickers, prints, and for our Plus tiers, t-shirts and hoodies that you cannot buy anywhere else as a reward for your loyalty. Ally tiers and up will have access to downloadable content (mp3, book PDFs, mixtapes, and curriculum) while Solidarity tiers and up will receive physical copies of everything we create together. All members will get to vote on what they want next and what kind of incentives maximize their subscription.

What can members expect from you music-wise?

Rocky will be working on her long-awaited next album with Beatrock Music! Patrons will get to see the entire process: from beat selection all the way to mixing and mastering studio sessions at the BRM compound in LA. Patrons will watch me write, record and release an album, in anticipation of upcoming live performances, where they will receive free admission and All-Access VIP. I would love to take this show on the road and meet them all!

Rock&Roz’s 10th mixtape and upcoming free mixtapes will all be hosted only on Patreon. The podcast will include seasons, special guests and a way for you to hear exclusive tracks on the regular.

How will Patreon impact how you operate as a business, the booking process and your relationship with fans on other social media platforms?

I’ve always wanted to employ critical dialogue within my music, about my music, and about the future of music for BIPOC artists, but sadly, that can’t happen in the brief moments we interact through social media. Social media has galvanized movements, but it has done the opposite to encourage deep connection or empathy within communities. And with social media algorithms designed around consumerism, much of what we do is promote a product, even if it is centered around a purpose. We begin to see ourselves as the product to be exploited.

Patreon has allowed me to deepen my connection with my fans by giving them a space to interact outside of social media platforms. It has also given me accountability to my fans: the ability to state my goals out loud and have them invested in the journey as well as the end result. Even though I’m grateful for having 27k+ followers on Instagram, it is the people on this platform that give me the ability to support myself and my family as a BIPOC woman artist, and that is the bottom line. I return the gratitude by welcoming my patrons into my home, my ongoing creative processes and my family.

What is your bigger goal as an artist and journalist? What is your vision with Patreon?

My goal is to create an independent media company that is fully funded by its members and doesn’t depend on advertisers that influence our story-telling. Being from The Bay, I understand the importance of local and independent media, but our current pay structure for writers and capitalist model of publications have made the industry unsustainable in the digital world. With this model on Patreon, there is always a budget for creating content and paying for contributor content, which is important to supporting other independents.

We completed Year One with the production of a book based on my music, and for Year Two, I want to create a BIPOC-centered magazine! I’ve assembled a team to incorporate it into a digital format for our patrons to read immediately and every month will have articles, photo shoots, Patron profiles, and exclusive content. At the end of the year, we will vote on the name and look of the magazine, the creative concept, and the articles published on Patreon that we want to include.

Along with the magazine, you can expect a children’s book and a guided journal to encourage all of our members into daily practice that Rocky believes is vital to self-care, reflection and visioning.

Solidarity is not the same as support. To experience solidarity, we must have a community of interests, shared beliefs and goals around which to unite...Support can be occasional. It can be given and just as easily withdrawn. Solidarity requires sustained, ongoing commitment.

Goals
34% complete
When I reach $5000 per month, I'll release a full length album (13 tracks) plus hire a team to shoot three music videos.

I will also release a lyric book with commentary on songs and footnotes on specific cultural references and behind-the-scenes stories.

Patrons will get to interact with me one-on-one and via video chat weekly.
