Hi! I'm Rod Blackhurst. I'm a film director, producer and writer. I've directed and produced two feature films - the Netflix Original documentary AMANDA KNOX and HERE ALONE which won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival

I'm currently directing MY FIRST STUDIO FEATURE!!! an original film called THE WHITE ROOM for Amblin Partners. My friend Bryce and I created this film, set in my home town, with a lead character inspired by my mother. More on that later.

If you don't know me or my work, here are the trailers for AMANDA KNOX and HERE ALONE.

"Rod, what are you doing here?"
4 years ago my friends David Ebeltoft, Noah Lang and I made HERE ALONE for $176,000. The film premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival where it won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. We made that film because we wanted to have agency over our careers and our paths in life - and also because for years Hollywood said “You haven’t made a feature film yet, so how do we know you can?” A classic Catch 22 situation. So we made a film. It was hard.

Now things are even harder. The hills got bigger. The boulders got bigger. And my experience has been that most people in Hollywood don't have any interest in coming up with ideas and actually making them.

I just want to be making movies. I need to be making movies to be mentally healthy and to be fulfilled. It's also what I'm good at.

That's why I'm here. After falling victim to the institutionalized way of thinking in Hollywood I need to get back to making movies; focused on generating new ideas and to making them.

"Rod, why Patreon?"
Patreon gives me a safe space to interact directly with people (you!) who care about what I'm doing and an opportunity to invite you into my/our process. Whether you are fan of my/our work, an aspiring filmmaker or simply a movie lover, I hope this is for you.

I need your financial support because making movies - and more importantly, developing them, takes time and money.

For example, last year I optioned a Rolling Stone article by my friend Seth Harp about two marines who were left behind in Iraq. I know that the article would make a good and important movie. With the money raised here on Patreon I can continue to renew the option on that article while screenwriter Patrick McConnville works on the script. I can also pay Patrick something - even if it's not a lot because I believe in paying my creative collaborators - especially when they're friends who are getting into the proverbial foxhole to get dirty and make something happen. I can't keep asking collaborators to work for free.

Patreon will allow me to do this. It will allow me to raise a small fund to pay for all the development that I and Witchcraft Motion Picture Company does.

Here's another example. My friend Ben Watts and I wrote a Disney style film about a young girl looking for her place in the universe. We want to turn it into a children's book or graphic novel - before trying to make it into a movie (largely because Hollywood said our 42 page story treatment wasn't detailed or nuanced enough to support right now).

Patreon will allow me to do this.

All money from Patreon will go to the Witchcraft Motion Picture Company development slate. You can view a list of those films and projects on the studio's website. I know these movies/ideas are good and worth making - and I need the money raised here for all of the development costs that institutional studios have deep coffers to draw from.

I don't have deep pockets (and don't think you do either) but I do have the ideas and the projects worth pursuing. Collectively, our forces combined, we can do this. Everyone told me I couldn't or shouldn't make HERE ALONE, AMANDA KNOX or THE WHITE ROOM. All those naysayers were wrong and now together we can keep proving them wrong.

Hollywood doesn't want to support filmmakers until after they've done all the hard work. But filmmakers need help NOW - at the beginning. I humbly need your support to continue to pursue work that I know is right and worth pursuing.

"Rod, what can you offer me?"
Full access to everything we do - at every step of the way.

For example a few weeks I tried to direct the Paramount Pictures remake of the 80’s film VISION QUEST. The studio didn’t like my approach to a remake. That’s how it goes. But after that rejection I was left thinking, there’s a good chance someone would want to know exactly how that process went/works - and at the same time, see the creative idea I proposed to Paramount.

While that's just one example (and a random one at that!) I will give you access to everything we do - every step of the way. I can’t purport to have any of the answers about how to navigate Hollywood and the Industry - but I can show you what we’re doing, how we’re doing it, and why we’re doing it. I guess you could call this “behind the scenes” but I'd like to think it’s showing you warts and all how filmmakers try (and often fail) to make movies. The filmmaking sausage.

Here are a few examples of what I'll share and talk about:

1. New ideas for films as they come (even if they’re just a paragraph or a premise).
2. Materials for our films that are in progress - starting with the first rough drafts - so you can see how something like THE WHITE ROOM goes from a 20 page story treatment to something that Amblin Partners purchases.
3. E-mails and communications from Hollywood - so you can see how stupid and toxic that place is.
4. Explain how the deals and equity were structured on our films.
5. Share accounting breakdowns from distributors on our films - and talk about how acquisitions process, distribution deals, etc.
6. Recommendations for books, films, articles and things that move and inspire me.

And so on.

Most importantly though, if there’s something you want to know about - or talk about - or see, I want you to ask. What do you want out of this?

I want to be a resource for you. I'm hoping to find collaborators and peers through this portal. Maybe we can create a film together? Maybe I'll share a premise for a film - and one of you will want to write it? And then we’ll work together to make the film.

Maybe it's overly optimistic - but that's how I think - I want to build a community of people who can lean on each other for support, networking, access, venting, creative work, and all that jazz. That's why I'm here.

"Rod, can we see some of your other work?"

Of course! All of my commercial, short film, music video and failed ideas are on my portfolio - www.rodblackhurst.com My feature film slate is available at www.WitchcraftMotionPictureCompany.com
