About Hans-Joachim Roedelius

"Since I started to create music in 1968 with coffee percolators, feedbacks and my handmade bambusflute until now at almost the age of 85, I have followed my own way.

May the goals of the Roedelius-Patreon-project work out to enable me to put all of my energy into what I still have to do to „empty“ the cornucopia of what I have to give to the world as an artist… Jeeeepppppeeeeeh"

Tim Story on the Roedelius Patreon -

Patronage in the arts is an old concept - it was especially crucial in past centuries when generous listeners couldn't buy a copy of a recording to help support the music and musicians they loved. So much art of all kinds wouldn't exist without the interest and generosity of benefactors. But it's no less critical today, especially to those artists whose important and uncompromising work just happens to exist at the edges of, or just outside of, the marketplace. My friend Joachim is one of those mavericks, and he could sincerely use our support. Like other visionaries of his generation, he has genuinely changed the culture, and enriched the world with his unique creations. Yet unlike others, he has steadfastly refused to bend his work to the marketplace, or exploit past glories to fund a lavish, or even comfortable lifestyle.

Achim is celebrating his 85th birthday next month, and is still creating vibrant music with the same sense of joy and exploration that he has since the 60's. Groundbreaking music vision doesn't pay a pension, though. A handful of patrons investing a small monthly amount would do an enormous amount of good to enable Achim to do the work we all love, and materially reduce the stresses of the everyday. Joachim does not live in poverty, but as an artist, he has no financial cushion. He lives simply and modestly, and he's one of the most generous people I know. This patronage is not a kickstarter campaign - there are 'perks' that all Roedelius fans will appreciate, but it is not an investment in a project, or the purchase of a product. It is an investment in the man himself, and his continued ability to create the music and art of his own choosing, just the way he always has. As patrons, we would all, in a very real way, 'own' a little of his success, his livelihood and his happiness.
