Hi, I’m Roger Strunk.

I'm a self-employed designer and illustrator based in Wichita, KS, where I work out of a classroom with three other designers, in an old school that has been repurposed as a co-working studio space.

I’m also the co-creator and author of Speculative Identities—a collaborative side project where I’ve been cataloging and analyzing visual identities that appear in science fiction. You might know me from that, or maybe you follow my personal Instagram account, where I bombard my followers with photos of things I’m finding or collecting for creative inspiration.

Why am I asking for support on Patreon?

Those of you who have been keeping up with my efforts are aware of the fact that I ended up putting Speculative Identities on hold last year. This was partly due to my spare time and energy being diverted to an extensive redesign of my personal site, but mostly it came down to client work taking priority over everything, to pay the bills and keep the lights on. On top of those things, it wasn’t sustainable for me to be staying up all night, assembling research entries—which is how most of the content for Speculative Identities was being generated in the months prior to me putting the brakes on things.

That said, I know readers enjoyed the work I was doing and I had a lot of fun with it. I also learned a lot, and have a ton of ideas for it that have yet to be realized. So I'm happy to say I'm kicking Speculative Identities back into gear again, after my long hiatus. But this time, I’m reaching out to you for some help with making it sustainable for me.

With enough support, I’m hoping I can better afford to set some time aside that would normally be devoted to client work, to work regularly on research and writing for the site. Patreon will also give supporters a place to comment and discuss the research with me, as more of a community. And once it has some momentum, I’d like to make merch and other rewards available as well. Stickers, patches, zines, etc. There's a ton of potential, if I can make time for all of the work it would require. And it would be a big motivator knowing I have an audience that's as passionate about science fiction and design as I am, that wants to see it happen.

I currently have two tiers available for membership.

One is for a low-commitment general backing of my self-initiated creative efforts, and the other is specifically targeting Speculative Identities with a boost to help get it moving again. In time, I'd also like to add tiers for some other things, and I'll keep you updated on that. Whichever way you show your support, if you decide to become a patron I can't thank you enough. And if you're already a fan of stuff I've shared elsewhere in the past, rest assured you'll be getting more of it as a result. Okay, that's my spiel. I hope I can count on you as a crewmate for the journeys ahead!

Crewmate
$2 or more per month

Show your support for my self-initiated creative work, including my efforts to write about and document various areas of design that I find particularly interesting or inspiring. Every little bit helps, giving me the ability to devote more time and resources to non-client work, while doing my best to keep things interesting for everyone that is along for the ride. With membership in this tier, you'll receive:

  • My Appreciation. Your support means a lot, and it's good to know there are people out there that get excited about the same sorts of things I do.

  • Regular Updates. Get early looks at illustrations and other things I'm working on. See what I'm adding to my collection of design artifacts, with more photos and context beyond what I typically share on Instagram.

*All higher tiers include Crewmate membership benefits.

Speculative Identities Level 1 Access
$5 or more per month

Support my work on Speculative Identities. This helps me pay for things like video rentals of source material, the licensed fonts and software I use to recreate identities for my analysis, and the expenses associated with our website’s upkeep—not to mention all the time that goes into everything. With membership in this tier, you'll receive:

  • Exclusive Insights. Posts regarding my research process and new source material I’ve obtained. Be the first to know about what is on the horizon for Speculative Identities.

  • Community. A place to discuss the research and pose questions or suggestions, with opportunities to influence what science fiction source material I delve into next.

  • Discounts. I'd like to make Speculative Identities merch available sometime soon. When that happens, discount codes will be shared with crewmates in this tier. In the meantime, I'll mail you a small package of stickers and buttons.

*With enough support here, I'd like to create a Level 2 Access that includes mailings. These could contain things like stickers, pins, patches, zines, prints, etc. Also, it would be great to get the site geared up for Phase 2, and start in on the Speculative Identities Project.
