About

Hello! Nice to meet you!

I'm Roopa Mahadevan, a vocalist based in New York City, originally from the Bay Area. My training is in Carnatic (South Indian Classical) music, a form of music I feel deeply and wish to share with the world in so many ways. My love for sound is greater than that, however, and in addition to performing traditional Carnatic concerts, you can find me:

  • Leading my crossover ensemble, Roopa in Flux (Improvised music/Jazz/R&B Soul);
  • Directing the versatile Carnatic choir, Navatman Music Collective;
  • Performing with the Brooklyn Raga Massive and Women’s Raga Massive;
  • Composing for and accompanying leading dancers and choreographers; and
  • Working with creators of all kinds.

I am enraptured by how brilliantly music accompanies us in our various avatars: on the dance floor, in meditation, in mourning, in joyous rapture with friends. And part of my goal is to explore all of these hues, without judgement or category. When we're in the middle of the artistic moment, we are acting at the level of instinct, spirit, and body - a much-needed respite from the hyper-verbal world of power-grabbing and productivity we live in. Art not only heals; it disrupts, offers ideas, allows us to reinvent ourselves, and transforms us. How freakin' cool is that?!

I'm most alive when in communion with others - with collaborators in rehearsal, facing audience members, among friends in a room, or when invoking the legacies and histories, blood and otherwise, that I'm a part of. I started this page because I think a community of patrons is what I need in my professional life - to keep me accountable, to help me engage with humans receiving content (other social media platforms feel less purposeful!) and to keep alive the momentum of my projects.  While I do a lot of live gigging (most often in NYC), I also think it's important I focus a bit more on the virtual community, than I have in the past. So, here goes! The “goals” section tells you more about what I plan to do with your support!

Thanks for joining me, and I appreciate any contributions at all that you can make in my journey!

In GRATITUDE,
Roopa

Goals
99% complete
One of the ways I’ve built community around my art is through collaborations and videos that can be enjoyed by Carnatic music lovers, the diasporic audience, and even unfamiliar viewers. I’d love to keep creating more of these videos to:

  • Address key social, cultural, and political issues facing the South Asian diaspora and other communities I feel connected to
  • Expose the depth and beauty of Carnatic music, especially the song-form, called krithi
  • Evolve traditional and austere art forms to help us speak to what's urgent, re-invent ourselves, and/or resurrect older ways of living
  • Disrupt, heal, and spread joy - through comedy, dance, theater, and whatever else I feel inspired to try out.
These funds would primarily cover production costs, shoot venues, and video editing.
