About Roslyn Talusan

You would think that the Canadian government understands how to address workplace sexual violence. I sure did when I worked there, but was rudely awakened after I reported a co-worker for sexually assaulting me in his car. Management assigned my workstation within 100 feet of his, and threatened to fire me if I told anyone about it. When my PTSD got too much to handle, a different set of managers fired me. Nearly 5 years after the fact, I'm still drowning in the paperwork processes it takes to hold shitty people in power accountable. But hey, I've got a literary agent who wants me to propose a book about it!

As I've learned to cope with the trauma of being raped, betrayed by institutions, and bullied by my closest friends, writing has been crucial in dealing with it all. Culture critique makes up a vast majority of my freelance writing portfolio. Analyzing how we consume mainstream pop culture in relation to how we treat sexual violence is one of my many forms of activism — the written word and my voice are my favourite weapons against the patriarchy.

After I was unceremoniously and unjustly fired from my stable job in the public service, I've relied on community support to continue my creative work. My writing is necessary if we want to put an end to rape culture and to ensure public institutions are leaders, not opponents, in this fight. If you want an inside look at what it's like for a survivor to stand up against the powers that be, you want to support my work!
