About Rebecca Maria Gold

Hi! Naimbag a bigatyo amin! Aloha!

I want to first acknowledge the Kanaka Maoli, the Native Hawaiian people of these islands who continue to steward this 'āina and who I learn from every day. None of my work would be possible without their knowledge and leadership.

My name is Rebecca Maria Goldschmidt, an artist currently living in Pālolo Valley in the ahupua'a of Waikiki on the island of O'ahu in Hawai'i.

Join me on this journey through my creative research on "Cultural Fibers", with an exclusive look into my research diary, my studies on the history of textiles, our human relationships with plants and fiber, and my experiments in getting to know the plants living around me. With a focus on the Northern Philippines, I'll also be sharing cross-cultural learnings from Hawai'i, the Pacific, México, Chicago, and other spaces I call home. My work ties in my studies of Ilokano language and culture, learnings from my community organizing and activism, as well as the exploration of my personal genealogy and ancestral connections. My goal with this Patreon is to work towards making A BOOK about the ways we are connected through textiles and material culture.

In the same way you might order a weekly veggie box from a CSA (community-supported agriculture program) to support your local farmers, Patreon allows you to support my creative production and art-making with a different kind of CSA: Community-Supported Artmaking! Making art is work, and work has value! With the contributions of many, you can help support my labor and receive offerings in return that feed your curiosity, your own studies or personal journey.

Things you might expect to receive in return include: writings on language, culture, and textiles; archival images and accompanying stories; photographs documenting my processes; video diaries; kitchen updates and how-tos; interviews and schmoozing with other artists and thinkers; mini-lectures and Q&A sessions; and more! This is only the beginning and with your input I hope this can grow and change to serve us all.

Thank you for coming with me on this journey!

I recently completed my MFA at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. You can visit rrrebecca.com for more of my work and follow me on Instagram @bigbigbigthings <3
