Perhaps you've heard of Mastodon already — it's the decentralised, federated social network that all your friends are leaving Twitter to join. Why are they leaving Twitter? Because Mastodon offers a better, more humane alternative, that's not driven by advertiser needs, and not a minefield of arguments and rage.

Pick an instance (a bit like a neighbourhood) that fits your preferences and enjoy a far better signal-to-noise ratio than the "everyone ranting in a giant room" that Twitter offers.  Ruby.social is one such instance of Mastodon, aimed at gathering friendly folk who have an interest in using Ruby, Rails or any related technology. It's not always about programming, but that's one of the things that we share. You can sign up for free (once you agree to our community rules), and join us — we'd love to have you!

Or sign up to a different Mastodon instance (or another compatible server, since it's all based on open standards); you can still interact with  Ruby.social, follow people on our instance, and participate in the community.

There are some small costs involved in running an instance — mainly hosting. If you'd like to put a few gold coins into the pot, that would be amazing, but it's absolutely not required. You can still support us by signing up (to any instance), participating in the community and making it a better place to be than birdsite, as some of us call it. If anything, that's more important than any money. Join us, bring your friends, and let's build the future of social networking together!

As an extra-special thanks for this level of support, you can nominate an image to be turned into a custom emoji for this instance! Why not emoji yourself!

(NB that images must meet our code of conduct, and if a non-celebrity face is used, permission of the person depicted must be given)

If you're a company or organisation that can support a little more than an individual might, we will say thanks to you with a logo and link to your homepage from the Ruby.social homepage.
