Quarterly Giveaways
I love mailing stuff to people, and I love getting my work out of my garage and into the world. If we can get just a bare minimum of monthly support, I'll hold a quarterly giveaway, just for patrons. Items to be given away might include large prints, or even a copy of one of my handmade photobooks.

In some way or another, we're all looking for a connection, aren't we?

I've always had a fascination with photography, from the first time I watched a Polaroid develop before my eyes when I was a kid, to my first 35mm SLR in high school, to making multimedia slideshows in college. But it wasn't until the birth of my first child that I really started not just taking pictures, but trying to make meaningful images.

Since then, I've explored a number of different subjects and themes through my photography and writing, from my experience of family, parenthood, the ephemerality of childhood, and the passage of time;

to nostalgia, memory, homecoming, the impressions that we leave on a place, and which it leaves on us;

to an investigation of the community in which I live.

I've come to realize that in all of these photographic projects, there's a common theme: a connection to something outside myself, something bigger than me.
Of course, sometimes I just like to make pretty pictures, too.

My name is Michael Sakasegawa, and I'm a photographer and writer. I'm interested in stories. True stories, fictional stories, and those in between. Written stories, visual stories, the stories we tell each other, and those we tell ourselves.
I believe that art is a conversation. In the best examples, you'll look, listen, or read, and in doing so you'll find something that resonates with you. Perhaps a new truth, or a familiar one that you're able to see in a new way. Maybe you'll see a little piece of yourself, an emotion or experience that you've felt and, seeing that, you'll know that the artist feels it too. And maybe it makes you feel a little less alone.
I hope that you'll help support me in my efforts to make those connections, to tell those stories, and to bring a little more beauty into the world. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
If you'd like to catch up with me elsewhere, you can find me on all manner of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Ello (yes, even Ello). There's also my main site, sakeriver.com, where you can find galleries of my personal photography as well as my blog.
