The making of letters in every form is for me the purest and the greatest pleasure, and at many stages of my life it was to me what a song is to the singer, a picture to the painter, a shout to the elated, ore a sign to the oppressed. It was and is for me the most happy and perfect expression of my life.   --- Rudolf Koch

So...Who Am I ?
In 1987 some dear friends were willing to put a newbie calligrapher to work on their wedding invitations. Since then my creative outlet, my artistic pursuit has centered around letters and the calligraphic line. Being a creative was, however, my 'second' job, my 'hobby'. But no more!

I quit a full-time job as a Client Liaison for an estate planning Attorney to dedicate myself to my art. For over 30 years I have been creating calligraphy for events and original pieces on commission, teaching calligraphy in private lessons and in formal settings - part-time.

So...Why Am I Here at Patreon?
I have 3 major goals right now as I begin my full-time career as a full-time artist and resident creative here on Patreon:
  • Produce work
  • Teach & Share
  • Learn
Producing Work: I don't know about you - but I usually need a strict deadline hanging over me to get a job done. Making art strictly for the sake of making it often gets put way down to the bottom of my to-do list. So being here - I am making myself accountable to my community (YOU) here on Patreon. I am promising myself and my patrons (YOU!) that I will create on a regular basis. Pieces to sell, to reproduce as prints or cards, or to share as digital downloads (and maybe more offerings as this evolves - another way YOU come in as we share ideas)

Teach & Share: I have noticed a great need to weed through the onslaught of calligraphic "stuff" online. Not that I have ALL the answers but I have spent about 30 years (so far!) practicing & studying calligraphy. Workshops, retreats, books, one-on-one with some of the great practitioners, practice, practice, practice...I have a lot of calligraphic knowledge swimming around in my head and in my hand. I enjoy sharing what I have learned with others who want to dive into the world of letters. Here on Patreon, I can gather a community of people and create an on-line place to ask questions, to share, to teach.

Learn: "To teach is to learn twice"- Joseph Joubert. This platform & building a community here is simply a way to continue to learn.

My hope is that those who join me by following and supporting and participating will help build a community where all this great sharing & learning can happen! My hope is that all of YOU will participate and we can all see where this goes. Will we develop a formal, on-going study? Will we create a forum where YOU as creators can get feedback/critique on what YOU are working on? I'm open to almost anything as this evolves. So, let's do this. Look for some public posts to get us going - and some patron-only will be coming soon!

Let's get this party started! (that is probably a dated phrase, but what the heck).

Stuff You Might Care To Know

I am a member of the Colleagues of Calligraphy here in Minnesota, the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, and the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association.

My original works have been exhibited and garnered various awards and recognition throughout the greater Pittsburgh area, Ohio and Florida and many pieces reside in private collections in the US and Canada. I even have a tattoo design which can be found on its person in Australia.

I am honored to have had work published in Letter Arts Review Annual Review Issue on several occasions.

I have been fortunate enough to enhance my artistry and skills as a student in workshops of noted calligraphers Sheila Waters, Myrna Rosen, Carl Rohrs, Reggie Ezell, Laurie Doctor, Pamela Paulsrud, Georgia Angelopoulos, Yukimi Anand, Julian Waters, Thomas Ingmire, Judy Melvin, Peter Thornton, John Stevens, and Timothy Botts, among others.

I am married to my dearest friend and soul-mate with whom I have two sons who, by far, are my greatest creations.

Whence did the wondrous mystic art arise,
of painting speech and speaking to the eyes?
That we by tracing magic lines are taught
how to embody and to colour thought.
