About Salvage Magazine

Salvage is a journal of revolutionary arts and letters, described by Enzo Traverso, author of Left-Wing Melancholia, as ‘doubtless the most beautiful and exciting journal which I have seen in the last years.’

‘Hope must be abandoned before it can be salvaged,’ we wrote at our launch in 2015. Now that hope is to be so salvaged – cautiously and urgently, warily and exuberantly, braced for defeat and straining against it – we are embarking on a modest relaunch, a consolidation of operation. Towards which we hope the use of this platform, Patreon, can be a key step.

Salvage was founded in firm opposition to the economy of quick reactions and skimming, and remains committed to the long form, to the longue durée of writing and of reading. In making use of the affordances of platform capitalism, we are adamant that this commitment will not be compromised. We will not offer floods of daily hot takes or Salvage-branded punditry. We would not performatively ‘move fast and break things’, as per the Silicon Valley credo, even if we could. And, convinced as we are that the materiality of culture matters – the materiality of writing, in particular, in all its modes, and of visual art too – we are determined that the print journal will remain our centre of gravity, the key locus of Salvage's presence.

We are hugely proud of what we have done so far, but this year we want to do more, and for that, we will need resources. Quite apart from needing to fund some of the donated editorial and organisational labour that has hitherto kept Salvage going, there are other changes we are eager to make:

  • We are moving to a twice-yearly publication schedule, one issue in the Spring and one issue in the Autumn, supplemented by new, regular, online editorials.

  • While we have, on principle, always paid our contributors, with more income we intend to offer a good deal more, doubling our current small fee, as a start.

  • Since all of our back issues are either already sold out or will be soon, we would like to make these available again, by whatever means and in whatever forms we can.

  • We intend as soon as practicable to expand Salvage's operations to include a regular podcast – one just as painstakingly and lovingly produced as is the periodical itself.

  • And we have other plans, too, including to ramp up our official presence at political and cultural events, and, as soon as possible, to host our own events and conferences.

To these ends we appeal to those who find value in what we do: if you can support us financially, thank you so very much.

Everyone who opts to donate will receive our undying gratitude and solidarity. In addition, this is what we can offer to our Patreons at various levels.

$50 Salvor (all of the above + Salvage greeting card)
Everyone who pays at least $50 per month will receive editorials, biweekly articles, PDF back issues, the print issue, merchandise… and an annual exclusive Salvage greeting card.

Salvage is edited and written by and for the desolated Left. Desolated by capitalism and its sadisms, by the birth pangs of new global far Right, by the horrors of mass extinction, by decades of defeats visited on the Left, and the Left's weary bad faith and bullshit in the face thereof. Desolated yet militant. Sober about the fragility of the Left’s recent gains, but more full than ever of revolutionary Sehnsucht: yearning to be surprised, for our sobriety to be upended.

We will continue both to release all our print essays online in the weeks after publication and to release online-exclusive essays, and we will keep all fiction, poetry, photography and art exclusive to the print edition. None of the plans and rewards above affect current print-only subscriptions, which will continue to be available via our website, but will help Salvage beyond measure. Thank you.
Goals
$869 of $1,000 per month
When we reach $1000 a month, Salvage will be able to pay for some of the vital administrative and editorial work that keeps us going.
