Sam Dylan Finch is creating a blog for queer and mental health communities!

In July of 2014, I created a blog for one reason and one reason only — as a queer person with mental illness, I wanted a space where I could be my full self.

I was tired of being told that I could be a queer/transgender writer OR a mental health writer, but that I couldn’t be both.

That’s exactly why I set out to prove them wrong. With nothing to lose, I created a space where both of these conversations could happen together.

Years later, that blog — Let’s Queer Things Up! — has become a remarkable resource for queer and transgender people, as well as those with mental health struggles, to connect with someone that truly “gets it.”

Having lived these experiences myself, as well as having a background in journalism and the social sciences, I’ve put everything I have into supporting these communities through my writing. And I work hard to make sure I do it in a way that’s accessible to just about anybody.

Today we have a community of nearly 28,000 people, motivated to make an impact and learn more about topics like transgender identity, suicide awareness, disability justice, and so much more.

But I couldn’t do it without you.

Many of you asked how you could support me. And at first it felt a little weird to ask for money, because money was never the goal. But with time, I realized that with the help of patrons like you, I could do this work in a more sustainable way.

And even better, I could reinvest that money into making the blog even better.

I’m passionate about this Let’s Queer Things Up!, and if you’ve landed on this page, I suspect you are, too. That’s why I’m asking you to make a monthly donation — even if it’s just a dollar per month — to make sure that this resource can thrive well into the future.

I’ve set up some rewards to begin building a community here, too — a community that I hope you’ll be a part of! My ultimate hope is that, through Patreon, you can help shape the direction of Let’s Queer Things Up!, and you can get to know me better, too.

So are you ready to queer things up?

As always, I’ll be taking a minimum of 20% of your donations, and reinvesting that into other platforms and advocates that specifically focus on the mental health of people of color, especially as it relates to QTPOC.

Because while being compensated for the work is important, I recognize how critical it is to support others who are working for justice (and often times, survival) in areas where I have privilege — and that I couldn't do this work visibly without the privileges that I have. If you're curious where that money is going currently, the bottom-right corner will show you a list of which Patreons we're supporting together!
