Hi! My name is Leo and I am an English Boatbuilder on a mission to rebuild and relaunch a historic wooden sailing vessel that was built in 1910, called TALLY HO.

Firstly, many thanks for showing an interest and dropping by. This project is the biggest thing I have ever undertaken, and it's both labour-intensive and expensive. I am experienced, hardworking and dedicated, but I would struggle to finish this project without the support of people like yourself.

When I considered taking on TALLY HO to save her from being destroyed, I knew the amount of work and expense would be extraordinary. As I thought about ways to tackle it, I developed the idea of documenting the rebuild, and involving volunteers. I hoped this would not only help make the restoration possible, but also turn it into a wider-reaching project that will be of interest and benefit to a range of boatbuilding and sailing enthusiasts, and also introduce others to the craft and the way of life that has bought me so much satisfaction.

With the help of some great volunteer labour, the rebuild is now progressing well. Much of the structure and hardware of the vessel has been removed and put aside. The Keel Timer has been replaced with a huge scarphed beam of Purpleheart. Roughly 1/3 of the boat has been reframed with Southern Live Oak frames, the futtocks having been fastened together with Black Locust wedged treenails. The original lines of the boat were lofted full size on the workshop floor, and the new frame templates were taken off that drawing, to ensure that the shape of the rebuilt boat matches the original design. The remaining frames will be replaced when the new Centreline is complete.

As of writing this in February 2019, we have just begun to replace the Stern Assembly part of the centreline, having sourced some large pieces of Purpleheart for that purpose. The old Stern Assembly will be removed and the new pieces will be fitted in to the boat in the next few weeks. With help from a big group of volunteers, we will then be having an intensive re-framing period, where we hope to replace all the frames in the stern of TALLY HO before the end of March.

I hope to restore TALLY HO with as much historical accuracy as possible, whilst maintaining the highest standards of materials and workmanship, so that she will last for at least another 107 years. Eventually I plan to sail the boat back from the Pacific NW to the UK, which will be a journey worth documenting in itself, and race her in the famous Fastnet Race, which she won in 1927.

Although I have been saving money as hard as I can for the last few years, this project is proving to be more expensive than I had imagined. My plan was originally to return to paid work whenever neccessary to top up the funds, and I am still perfectly willing to do so if I need to. However, the financial support I have been receiving from my amazing supporters on Patreon has helped me minimise those interruptions.

Thanks for reading, and a massive thank-you to all those who have supported my project so far, financially or otherwise.

If we can make it here, I will be able to work absolutely full-time on TALLY HO without taking any breaks to earn money elsewhere. I should be able to hire someone to help with video production, which will increase the amount of days I can spend actually working on the boat. The workshop cuisine will doubtlessly be stepped up a notch too!
