Hey there! My name is Sarah and I make non-fiction comics. I wrote, drew and painted two books, both published by Drawn and Quarterly: How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less (2010) and Rolling Blackouts (2016). It takes me a long time to make books, as you can see by the dates on those, and in between large projects I make shorter comics published in the Nib, the Guardian, and other places. You can see a bunch of those on my website.

This Patreon page was once devoted to the comics I was making while I was pregnant. I collected the first half of those comics into a digital minicomic called Ajonjolí Diary and put it up on Gumroad where you can pay what you wish (or nothing at all) to download it. Shortly after I posted that digital minicomic, our son Diego was born...two months early by emergency C section. Don't worry, he's a year old and doing great now! But needless to say, our lives were turned upside down for a while with a long hospital stay and then I spent many months being a full-time parent. Comics took a backseat and this Patreon was kind of put on pause.

ANYWAY I'm back now! Diego is at daycare three days a week and I'm starting a new book project on climate change and becoming a parent, plus still making short comics. This Patreon will be a place to store ideas as that book evolves (probably slowly), sketches, diary comics, blog entries and whatever else falls into the junk drawer of life as a cartoonist.

I'm going to be honest: I'm ambivalent about having a Patreon. On one hand, I like having a sort of blog where people can opt in to read things and you actually get notified when I post, unlike Instagram where an algorithm decides whether you see someone's posts or not. On the other hand, I don't love the idea of you having to pay me to see my comics. I think my work has value! But Patreon income is an extra for our family, not our main means of support. It IS a major form of support for a lot of other creators out there, so by all means go support them.

If you do want to pledge to this Patreon, I will probably just use that money to support other creators on Patreon. If I end up having a lot of Patreon supporters, I'll be able to donate more money to charities related to things I care about like economic and racial justice, refugee relief, and aid to those displaced or otherwise affected by climate change.

So yeah, I'm really selling this, right? Chip in if you want, whatever amount you want. Or don't. And thanks for reading this long thing.
