About Sarah Jane Scouten

Song Craft is a free immersive online workshop series led by songwriter and educator Sarah Jane Scouten, focusing on ideas, practical skills and history within the songwriting practice. Held twice a month, each session will surround a theme, for instance “Protest Songs”, “Early Country Music”, “Herbalism and Folk Music” and more. Using a mixture of techniques such as close listening, discussion, breakout rooms (on Zoom), and PowerPoint presentations, the workshops are intended to be educational, inspiring and interactive for a small but diverse group of participants. Workshop dates will be announced monthly from January - May 2021. Monthly Patreon support payments will be paused when the series is complete.

Sarah Jane Scouten is a multi-award nominated folk and Americana artist from the West Coast of Canada. She’s called Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Cardiff and Luxembourg her home and creative hub. Currently based in south-west Scotland, Sarah Jane has toured festivals and concert halls globally, sharing the stage with Martha Wainwright, Mandolin Orange, Corb Lund, William Prince, Sam Lee, and one time, Peter Yarrow. Her image-fueled lyrical style, drawing musically from British and North American folk and country traditions, have made an impact from Alaska to Berlin.

In 2016 Sarah Jane began teaching songwriting and has taught at beloved music camps such as Nimblefingers Bluegrass and Old Time Workshop and BeyondTrad Camp in British Columbia. She has also guest lectured in songwriting at the University of British Columbia. Her teaching style focuses on developing the ear of the songwriter, by analysis of the intersection of music and lyrics, discovering why the sum of the song is often greater than its parts. She facilitates discussion, sharing of ideas and constructive feedback that leaves participants feeling empowered and inspired.
