About Sarah McQuaid

I’ve been writing and playing music for almost as long as I can remember, starting in my very young childhood when I used to compose truly terrible songs and instrumentals and inflict them on my long-suffering family and schoolmates. In 2007 I became a full time musician, and since then I’ve mostly been so busy touring, writing and recording that I never stopped to question what it was that drove me to do it.

It was really only when the Covid-19 crisis put an abrupt stop to my touring that I realised that the thing I was missing most was what I can only describe as the magic. It’s the magic that happens when you’re playing music in a room with other people, whether it’s in a concert situation with an audience or a singaround or session with other musicians, and the music takes over; suddenly you feel that you and everyone else present are essentially vehicles for the music, that the music is generating an energy of its own, independent of anything you’re doing … and there’s nothing else like it.

And then when you discover that some of that magic that you felt happening was just as real for other people, and that you were responsible for getting them to feel it … there’s nothing like that, either. When somebody comes up after a gig and tells me that they’ve had a rough day and nearly didn’t make it to the show, but they’re glad they did, because it’s turned their whole mood around, or when they tell me that they had a really strong emotional reaction to one of my songs, or that a song I wrote sustained them through a tough time, I’d have the most incredible feeling of joy and validation. “That’s it,” I’d tell myself, “you’ve done your job.”

It was always a struggle financially, even before Covid-19, but the magic of music and the connection with other people that it generates are what make the struggle worth continuing. And what I’ve discovered about Patreon is that it’s keeping that sense of connection alive. It’s also giving me some badly needed financial stability and helping to pay bills and put food on the table, and that makes a massive difference — I wish I’d started a Patreon page years ago! But even more than your contributions (and they can be as little as £1, $1 or €1 a month — it all adds up, believe me), it’s your companionship that’s so, so important: the knowledge that there’s a community of people out there who are personally touched by my music and who want to make sure I’m able to keep making it. I hope you’ll decide to be part of that community.

In return, no matter how much or how little you contribute, you’ll get access to my ongoing series of “How To Play …” and “Story Behind The Song” videos that I’m making as an exclusive benefit for my Patreon supporters, as well as downloads of sheet music (including DADGAD tablature and chord diagrams as well as standard tuning chords and lead sheets) that I hope will eventually become part of a future Sarah McQuaid Songbook … plus random drawings and photos, thoughts, progress updates and maybe a few special discount deals and one-off merch items.

My hope is that it’ll be a two-way street, that you’ll derive as much happiness and connectedness as I do from this community we’re creating here. Your input and feedback is tremendously valuable to me, and I can’t express how very, very grateful I am for your support … and your company.

If you have friends you think might like to be part of this thing as well, please do send them here — if I can reach my initial goal of 200 patrons, we’ll have a celebratory hangout/Q&A online via Zoom!

With love,

Sarah McQuaid

Thanks so much to Devon-based photographer Alastair Bruce for the banner photo above, which he took in my garden way back in 2007 — the year I gave up my day job, became a full-time musician and moved to Cornwall. The profile photo is a still from the video of my song “The Tug Of The Moon” by Mawgan Lewis.
