What Is a Doctor?

Saitou Eijirou was an 'elite'; a top student from a prestigious Japanese Medical University. But he's trading in his textbooks for tongue depressors, and committing to his new job as intern at the University Hospital. The long stress-filled hours take their toll while his medical ideology strains under the weight of real-world practice. Saito wants to do good, but he's beset by an entrenched and sometimes corrupt medical system. If he wants to save lives, Saito must make compromises. But if he sacrifices his ethical standards to do right, then what kind of doctor is he?

Black Jack ni Yoroshiku (also known as 'Give My Regards to Black Jack') received an 'Award of Excellence in Manga' at the 6th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2002. Due to complications with the publisher, Shuho Sato moved his work into the public domain, giving anyone permission to use his work in any way they see fit. In 2016, the Nerd Fountain crew set out to make an audioplay worthy of Shuho's work. Here's to hoping Sensei notices us. ;)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi!  I'm John-Michael Gariepy, script-writer, director and editor for this audioplay.  The voice actors and I had a blast making it, but this was a mammoth project.  The five episodes of the first season took approximately nine months to produce.  But many of the problems I encountered were part of the learning process.  I'm hoping I can finish the ten or so episodes that come with Season Two well-within a year's time.

But I certainly can't guarantee that will be the case.  The needs of the podcast are many, and my budget is currently shoestring.  Even a small amount of money could make a difference between spending weeks to hunt down a friend to read a couple of lines (which, admittedly, happened far too often) and the ability to pay for starting voice actors.  I could use a second editor for pushing through the trivial bulk of material (cleaning up audio, or finding appropriate sound effects) that take up a large portion of my creative time.  I could always use better audio equipment.  And while I don't expect audioplays to support me, I must admit it would be an awesome job, and the quality and frequency of these audioplays would only increase.

That's where you can help out.  Patrons of the podcast set up an account with Patreon and offer to donate whatever amount they feel comfortable.  Let's say, for the purpose of this example, ten dollars.  Each month we report that to Patreon, and Patreon charges you ten bucks.  As of right now, we're currently between Season One, and Season Two, but rest assured that we're hard at work whether the podcast is running or between seasons.

It may not seem like a lot of money to you, but every contribution is an incredible boon.  Even a single dollar per episode means I can contact someone on Fiverr and get some interesting background voices for the next season.  There's a reason why there are so many round-table style podcasts featuring current events or hobbies.  Those podcasts are relatively simple to make and produce. Consequently iTunes is flooded with talk shows.  Audioplays are far more demanding, leading to a dearth of good storytelling.  Let's help change that together, and give the world back its stories.

Thank you.  I promise to do a little drum roll on my desk, then say your name aloud.  You may not hear it, but on a quiet Spring night, when the dogwoods bloom and the cool ocean wind brushes your hair, you will feel my fingers reach inside you and caress your heart.

Looking good.  If you donate at this level, I'll link you to a super secret copy of our blooper real.  Jonathan Rousseau, the voice actor who plays Saito, sure does make a lot of weird voices when recording...

Welcome to the team!

I want to put merch at this level so you can show off your 'Say Hello to Black Jack'... I don't know.  Mug?  T-Shirt?  Bicycle Seats?  I honestly have no idea.

Unfortunately, our starting budget is very low, and I can't order merchandise for potential Patrons that may or may not exist.  But when and if people do start donating, we'll order merchandise, and we'll make sure our early subscribers get their stuff first.

In the meantime, I'd love to hear what it is my Elites want!  If you're one of the early donators at this level, then you've got a lot of sway in getting something you like.

If you're within fifty miles of me, I'll make sure to make a day of it, and head out and share a frosty beverage with you.  I might bring another cast member with me as well.

Like with the $15 level, I plan to give you merch, and more of it.  I just don't know what that will be right yet.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  It's people like you that make projects like this come together.

At this level, you get all the benefits of the previous level, plus even more nebulous promises.  I'm pretty sure that I'm supposed to include a tote bag at this level?  Yeah, let's say there's a tote bag involved in all of this!

Aw... thanks guys for chipping in.  I'll make sure to include you in my will.  However, none of you are getting my Japanese fighting fish shirt.  I'm wearing that to meet my maker.
